Engineering Design and Development Course Description

Engineering Design and Development (EDD) is the capstone course in the PLTW high school engineering program. It is an engineering research course in which students work in teams to design and develop an original solution to a valid open-ended technical problem by applying the engineering design process. The course applies and concurrently develops secondary level knowledge and skills in mathematics, science, and technology.

Utilizing the activity-project-problem-based (APPB) teaching and learning pedagogy, students will perform research to choose, validate, and justify a technical problem. After carefully defining the problem, teams of students will design, build, and test their solution. Finally, student teams will present and defend their original solution to an outside panel. While progressing through the engineering design process, students will work closely with experts and will continually hone their organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, their creative and problem solving abilities, and their understanding of the design process.

Engineering Design and Development is a high school level course that is appropriate for 12th grade students. Since the projects on which students work can vary with student interest and the curriculum focuses on problem solving, EDD is appropriate for students who are interested in any technical career path. EDD should be taken as the final capstone PLTW course since it requires application of the knowledge and skills from the PLTW foundation courses.

The Engineering Design and Development course of study includes:

  • The Design Process
  • Intellectual Property
  • Research
  • Problem Identification, Validation, and Justification
  • Teamwork
  • Project Management
  • Design Specifications
  • Concept Testing
  • Design Proposal
  • Virtual Solutions
  • Building a Prototype
  • Testing a Prototype
  • Test Evaluation and Refinement
  • Documentation
  • Presenting the Process and Results

Student Notebook

  • Students are expected to maintain a notebook at the very beginning of the EDD course. This notebook, Portfolio and Final Presentation will be your pathway to being successful. The Notebook and Portfolio will be checked every week. These and peer review will be the source of your grade.

Notebook Requirements

  • 2” – Three-ring notebook.
  • Engineering Journal (see options discussed in class)
  • Notebook dividers (12 tabs minimum) to organize material.
  • Additional Items needed for class:
    • Engineers Grid Paper for sketching.
    • Notebook paper for note taking
    • #2 Pencils or .05” mechanical pen

GRADING PROCEDURES

Weekly Grades:

Students will receive a grade on their journal, assigned tasked, portfolio and peer review every week. A rubric will be posted and deliverables will be posted for your reference, where applicable.

Unit Test:

None

Final Exam:

Your final technical report and presentation will be used for determining your final grade.  Presentation will be judge by a panel of professionals. They will be given a rubric and scoring sheet in order to properly provide an evaluation.

CLASSROOM RULES & REGULATIONS

ATTENDANCE: Students will be expected to be in class and ready to work when the tardy bell rings. Have paper and writing instruments available. It is the student’s responsibility to clear with the main office, any known tardiness or absence situations, before entering the classroom.

Tardy: Students that show-up late or do not have paper, writing instruments, and notebook available at the beginning of class will be considered tardy. Student’s that are tardy must report to the main office to receive a tardy pass before being allowed to enter the classroom.

LEAVING CLASS: Students are not to leave class without a planner and the permission of the instructor. Students should plan to use the restrooms before class. Only one student at a time will be allowed to leave the room.

FOOD & DRINKS: No bottle drinks (water included) and/or food items will be allowed in the classroom or lab, at any time.

FURNITURE & EQUIPMENT: Should be used and not abused. Do not sit on tables. Do not ride chairs around the room or mark up the floor by spinning the wheels. All furniture and equipment should be returned to its original location before leaving the class area. Students in first thru third blocks, are required to log-off their assigned computer daily. Fourth block students will be required to shutdown their assigned systems.

SAFETY: Students must have successfully completed the procedures for shop safety before being allowed to use any of the equipment within the lab. Horseplay will be considered as a major safety violation and will be dealt with severely and considered a safety violation which will cause you to lose privilges.

DISRUPTIVE TALKING: Will not be permitted. Upon the need to ask or answer questions, students will raise their hand and wait to be recognized by the instructor. Students must refrain from any type of disruptive behavior, which may interfere with a teacher’s right to teach and a student’s right to learn.
