Course Syllabus

Welcome to Math 3 Honors!

Math 3 Honors provides students with an in-depth study of math in a real world context. The course expands the study of the functions studied in Math 2 and also covers introductory topics from PreCalculus and Statistics. There is a state EOC exam in this class, Union County Public Schools requires a proficient score of a level 3 or higher on the exam (approximately 80% on the final) to receive credit for this course

Honors:
Math 3 Honors is an honors level course. This course is also available in the Program of Studies at the College Preparatory level. Students earning credit for an Honors level course receive an elevated number of Quality Points for their Grade Point Average. Students choosing the Honors level course should be aware that this Honors level course will include:

  • Required extension opportunities that are directly related to the Standard Course of Study. This includes additional content beyond that covered in the College Preparatory level.
  • More challenging coursework and assessments. Students will be expected to demonstrate higher levels of understanding for grades.
  • Students will have to focus and study regularly to master the content.
  • The expectation that students can move through the coursework at an accelerated pace and students experiencing difficulty should quickly seek guidance from their teacher on how they can be more successful.

Specific Goals and Objectives: Please click on the link below to gain an understanding of the course.

Pacing: Unit 1 Functions and Their Inverses, Unit 2 Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, Unit 3 Polynomial Functions, Unit 4 Rational Functions, Unit 7 Reasoning with Circles, Unit 8 Trigonometric Functions (Unit Circle), Unit 6 Reasoning with Parallelograms, Unit 5 Modeling Geometry and Triangles and Unit 9 Statistics (PACING SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Grading: Classwork/Homework: 20%     Progress Checks:20%        Tests:60%

Most classwork, progress checks, and tests will need work shown. If work is not shown then you will lose at least 20%.

Classwork should be completed to 100% and will be graded based off of 100% completion and 80%+ accuracy. If you want to redo an assignment then just ask, and resubmit the work.

Tests can be retaken for a passing grade if you failed it.

I update grades on a weekly basis. Please check Canvas daily for feedback on assignments, progress checks and tests. Powerschool will ONLY reflect your weekly grade while canvas reflects everyday work.

If a grade is marked INCOMPLETE in PowerSchool then that student did not complete an assignment and/or turn in their work for an assignment that week. If a grade is marked MISSING then they were absent. Due to the set up of class, most work can be completed online so MISSING is normally reserved for Progress Checks and Tests.

Office Hours: I offer office hours Monday from 7:30AM-8:00AM and Wednesdays from 3:10-4:10. Please let me know if you plan on staying the day before so I can plan accordingly.

Assessments and Assignments:

Assignments and Assessments will be a mixture of using Canvas, DeltaMath, activities, and projects.

Absent/Make-up work: Assignments will be due each day by Midnight and assessed a penalty of 10% off. It is then assessed 10% off for each week thereafter.

Assessments: Progress Checks and Tests are due by end of class each day they are assigned.

Classroom Expectations: Students are expected to be prepared by having their laptop, a graphing calculator, 2 notebooks (one for note taking and one for assignments), and something to write with every day. Students are expected to participate in their learning by taking notes, asking questions, answering questions, completing classwork, and working with others.

Attendance Expectations:  Most days will have a video that I created teaching the lesson so that you can work at a pace that fits your learning style. If you miss a school day then you are expected to watch the video lesson on your own and email me any questions that you may have, and use classtime or tutoring to get extra help.

Assignment Expectations: You are expected to turn in assignments daily so that you can receive feedback through Canvas. The feedback given is vital so that you can understand your mistakes when they occur and so that you can redo assignments.

Phones: All phones and ear buds must be put away in a bag during instruction. If a student does not follow the rule then it will be put up front in the holder or an administrator will come and get it.

Calculator: Require a calculator of TI-83 or above. I recommend TI 84+CE.

Online Learning Platforms:

Canvas: Must check each day. It will be used to post daily videos, assessments, assignments, and announcements when necessary.

Desmos: a free online calculator (also an app) and will be used to explore topics.

DeltaMath: will be used for assignments and assessments

Contact Information: If there is any concern or anything you feel I need to know, do not hesitate to email me at jonathan.saffles@ucps.k12.nc.us

The majority of assignments not completed on paper must be submitted on the learning platforms assigned by me.  Assignments can be submitted a variety of ways: uploading files, and typing into text boxes.  Students will be shown how to submit assignments on the learning platforms as needed.  Individual assignments will indicate which method of submission is expected.  If students need a refresher or have questions for Canvas, they can access the Canvas Student GuideLinks to an external site. for specific instructions.  It is the student's responsibility to ensure assignments are submitted on time and to contact the instructor if there is a problem. Please note that student activity is logged while in the learning platforms so instructors will be able to see if the student opened the assignment, if there was any activity including a log of student activities during on-line tests and quizzes.  Students are not allowed to leave the testing window during assessments.  Doing so is considered cheating and will be handled as set forth in the Porter Ridge HS handbook.

NOTICE: Although many assignments are submitted and graded in our learning platform, Canvas, the "final" grades shown may not be properly weighted and do not contain assignments that were not graded in Canvas.  For the student's official grades, please continue to access the parent portal through Powerschool. Login information should be the same as last year. If you need assistance accessing the parent portal, please contact the school.”
