Art I – Mr. D. Malady – G224 - SYLLABUS AND OUTLINE

profile.jpg ABOUT ME: 25th year teaching, graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and Penn State

Purpose: Art I is designed to reinforce and build on knowledge and skills developed at the elementary and middle school levels. It is the foundation for art study throughout high school. The course is mainly devoted to deliberate and systematic presentations of art processes, procedures, theories, and historical developments. Students will produce mainly two-dimensional works of art. The course emphasizes the study of the elements of art and principles of design, color theory, vocabulary, art criticism, art history, and safety in the art room. The approach to art experiences in some respects is experimental in terms of material use. Students are provided a strong foundation in design, drawing, and vocabulary in a structured learning environment. Individual approaches to problem-solving and decision-making are emphasized.

Class Expectations: Classroom rules and expectations are posted for everyone to follow. Failure to follow these rules will result in punishments ranging from teacher assigned detention to extra written work to additional cleaning duties to an office referral.

Hall Passes and Assigned Seats: I will have assigned seats. I will move you if you become a disturbance in the classroom. Hall passes are on my counter-top. One person may leave the room at a time. You fill out the pass and sign out.

Grading RegulationsClasswork and art projects are due on specific dates for each project. Due dates and project requirements will be posted on the marker board calendar and course website daily. Any work that is late will be accepted, but at a penalty. Grades will be provided to each student in a timely manner on “rubric” sheets detailing each aspect of the project graded. Progress reports will also be given out midway through each six weeks grading period. Six weeks grades will be based on a cumulative point system. The grade will be the percentage of points earned based on the total available points for a given six weeks. How will you be graded on art projects? Artistic talent and skill with materials are important to the grading rubric, but so is having good working habits each class day, following format instructions, and turning your work in on time!

Projects and Classwork: Still-Life, Interior Perspective, Landscapes, Artist Imitations, Painting and Color Theory, Pointillism, and more. Works will be created using pencil, ink, colored pencil, markers, watercolor,  and more. Outlines will be provided for each project.

Sketchbooks: Sketchbooks will be used for preliminary work done for large-scale projects and for any specific short-term sketchbook assignments given. A sketchbook is required in this course.

Supplies: A suggested art supply is provided. Students should have their own pencils and erasers on hand for each class day. Some students may wish to purchase their own additional art supplies.

Artist Summaries: You must complete three artist summaries each six weeks. You will study 9 artists in-depth during the course of the semester. Format will be provided for your completion. Class time will also be provided. Use the list for Art I to select your artists.

Major Monuments: We will study in-depth several dozen major monuments of art history during the course of the semester. Format will be provided for your completion. Students will be quizzed on the monuments each six weeks. Slide review lectures will be given. Use the list for Art I to complete your monuments. Put all major monuments in your sketchbook.

Vocabulary: The vocabulary of art terminology will help provide insight into art processes and develop a larger knowledge of art history. Chapter vocabulary assignments will be given periodically every six weeks. Format will be provided. Most of your vocabulary will go in your sketchbook. Make sure to sign the Honor Code on all written work.

Quizzes and Final Exam: Each 6 weeks there will be several quizzes. The “art history” quiz will be taken from the monuments you studied with your sketchbook work and my “slide review/lecture.” The “unit” quizzes will consist of short answer questions and drawing exercises based on your vocabulary and art projects. The final exam will be given according to the UCPS calendar, the date and time is to be announced. The final exam will be the same format of the quizzes, but longer (of course!). Make sure to sign the Honor Code on all written work.

Honor Code Policy: There is an “Honor Code” posted in the front of the classroom which should be included and signed at the end of each written assignment and quiz done for this class. Artwork does not need the honor code.

Class Website and Technology: We will use this everyday! All assignments will be posted here. You can follow day by day and six weeks by six weeks all the things we will do each day. We will use the canvas website and review materials on it daily. Bring your laptop everyday - have it fully charged!
