English III Honors Course Overview and Requirements

Prerequisites: English I, English II

Required Text: None; however, if you prefer handheld books and plan to pick up your own copies, we will be reading The CrucibleThe Great GatsbyIn Cold Blood, & A Raisin in the Sun. ***We may not get to all of these texts this semester, so you may want to buy them as needed.

Course Description: English III is an in-depth study of U.S. literature and U.S. literary nonfiction especially foundational works and documents from the 17th century through the  20th centuries. Interdisciplinary informational writing and multimodal presentations focusing on speaking and listening skills will be included as well.

Requirements and Evaluation: You will be required to complete assignments on a daily basis. Information concerning your daily tasks can be found in the Announcement Forum located on the left-hand side of your course page or the large red announcement banner.  Announcements are vital to your understanding of the expectations, communication, and due dates for this course. Please read the daily announcements every time you log in to your course.**

Late Work Policy:  All work should be completed on a daily basis.  However, there will be a degree of flexibility to account for “life.” Therefore weekly work is accepted as long as it is completed by Saturday at 11:59 PM of the same week. If a student does not meet a Saturday deadline for an assignment, a 10 point deduction will be applied each day for work submitted the week after the original deadline. Work submitted two weeks or more past the original deadline will receive no more than 60% credit.*

Academic Integrity:  All assignments for this course must be placed in the student’s shared English III folder, and I must have editing rights. I will not grade the assignment until this criterion is met. It is an expectation that you will complete all of your work without the aid of other students and/or outside websites (unless required by the assignment and correctly cited).  Plagiarism and cheating are serious academic offenses that result in a 0 on the assignment and possibly a disciplinary referral for breaking the honor code. We will be using Turn It In, which is a site that checks for plagiarism...Just FYI.

Synchronous Learning: The assignments are mostly asynchronous, meaning that instruction does not require the simultaneous participation of students and teachers during the instructional process. However, a synchronous component to this course will occur most days. The time to log in to Microsoft TEAMS will be on the homepage or in your announcements. Students are able to communicate with their teacher by email, Canvas Inbox, Microsoft Team meetings, and during instructor office hours. You may be expected to participate in synchronous meetings with your classmates and teacher this semester. Please contact me to schedule other synchronous meetings. I prefer you to contact me via your Canvas Inbox.

Grading: Your first 6 weeks will represent 25% of your grade, your second 6 weeks will represent 25% of your grade, your third 6 weeks will represent 25% of your grade, and your final exam will represent 25% of your grade.
