Welcome to Photography I/II!

Please read the following information, sign and return by Monday 1/11/2021.

Course Overview: This course is an exploration of digital

photography, image-editing and art-making using

digital images.  During this semester, students will gain an

understanding of digital photography techniques and

photo-editing processes.  Students will continue to explore

and apply the basics of the elements of art and the principles

of design to create interesting and strong compositions. They

will learn to communicate their ideas through photographic

media and artistic processes with sufficient skills and sensitivity.

Students will also study the artistic production of photographers

through history in order to develop objectivity about their

own images.

Materials: You will need a DSLR camera and chrome book for class everyday.

  • Digital camera
  • Chrome book
  • SD card (to transfer from camera to chrome book)
  • On occasion: funds for color printing (.10 - .25 cents per page in Media Center.  Competition entries require students who are entered to have their pictures professionally printed.  CVS, Walmart, Costco… are just a few places a student can go to have competition pictures printed)

Students should have their own digital camera, they should not be using Smart phones until the 2nd / 3rd term. (Cameras should have the ability to adjust ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, preferably Cannon or Nikon).

If purchasing a camera is not currently an option, students should be prepared to wait and take photography at a later date.

Daily Expectations: This is an elective course and not required for graduation.  Mature behavior is a requirement.  During class, students will be allowed to go out and take pictures on school grounds.  Photography students should be respectful of other classes so to not disturb others.  Demonstrating respect and trustworthiness is an expectation of all Weddington students, especially those in photography class. The art/photo room creates an environment for creative learning.  Staying focused produces quality work.

My availability:

I am available virtually every Friday during the scheduled class time.  Students can join by clicking on the link provided in Canvas.  Students are also welcome to e-mail me and set up a time to meet virtually or in person during their lunch.  Social distancing requirements will be strictly observed and students will not be allowed to congregate in my room during lunch.

Grading:  Grades will be based on a rubric that addresses five criteria:  Accomplishing the Concept/objectives of the project; Creativity; Challenge, Composition and Design; and Craftsmanship.  Assignments can be re-submitted up to 3 times as necessary to achieve the desired grade a student wants.  All assignments must be complete and finalized before each of the term grades are due.  Assignments will not roll over between terms.

Deductions from grade:

-25:  Photo needs to be re-taken because it does not meet guidelines of assignment.

-15:  Photo is not “frame-able & hang-able” (Composition)

-10:  Each additional Major correction.  (Takes more than 10 minutes to make a correction)

-5: Each additional Minor correction.  (Can be easily changed)

I have read and reviewed the information provided in this syllabus in class, as well as with my parents.  I understand what is expected of me and agree to follow the school rules and the Art/Photo Classroom rules.  I also agree to accept any consequences that come with failure to follow the expectations, including coming in at lunch or after school to makeup work.

I understand that behavior related issues occasionally occur and consequences are in place such as referrals, parent teacher conferences or ISS. However, because Photography is an elective I will not conduct myself in any manner that would result in any of the above mentioned consequences.
