General Information

Description

Math 3 is a continuation of Math 1 and Math 2.  Math 3 will further explore topics of quadratics and advanced functions that were touched on in Math 1.  Math 3 will also dive deeper into Geometrical concepts along with Trigonometric concepts.  Math 3 will also help prepare students to take Math 4 or Pre-Calculus Honors.

"It is in Mathematics III that students pull together and apply the accumulation of learning that they have from their previous courses, with content grouped into four critical areas, organized into units. They apply methods from probability and statistics to draw inferences and conclusions from data. Students expand their repertoire of functions to include polynomial, rational, radical and logarithmic functions.  They expand their study of right triangle trigonometry to include general triangles. And, finally, students bring together all of their experience with functions and geometry to create models and solve contextual problems." - Common Core State Standards (Appendix A)

Expectations and Goals

The goal of Math 3 is for students to be prepared for Math 4 or Pre-Calculus Honors. Math 3 has a North Carolina End of Course exam attached to it.  It is also a goal of Math 3 students to be able to complete this EOC with a level of proficiency, while also showing personal growth with their own math skills.

Required Materials

  • Paper – to be able to show work. Can be loose leaf or spiral notebook.
  • Writing utensil – students are to use a pencil for any assignment, but can use a pen to take their own notes.
  • Calculator – desmos.com/TI 84-graphing calculators will be the preferred methods because they both have a scientific and graphing component. Desmos is also embedded in the program that the EOC uses. If you have your own handheld or graphing calculator you are more than welcome to use it.

Course Layout/Expectations

Monday – Thursday – Students are expected to log into Canvas and watch the live presentation of material presented by the teacher.  This presentation will be recorded and uploaded to Canvas.  The link to watch the live presentation will be found on the course Canvas calendar.  Students will have a short assignment to complete each day.  This assignment will allow students to practice newly learned skills.
