American History II

Course Description:

American History two is a  survey of the social, political, economic, cultural, and intellectual history of the United States from the Civil War/Reconstruction era to the present. US History II examines industrialization, immigration, World Wars, The Great Depression, Cold War and Post-Cold War eras. American History 2 can be a very informative and rewarding course if you truly apply yourself to being successful!

Supplies Needed:

2. Pens and/or Pencils

Course Grading Structure: 

The following is a grading scale to be utilized throughout the course:

Honors:

Tests	50%
Projects	20%
Classwork	30%

College Prep (CP)

Tests	45%
Projects	25%
Classwork	30%

 

Grading Scale:  A: 90-100, B: 80-89, C: 70-79, D: 60-69, F: 59 and below

Late Work Policy: All late work will automatically be given a starting grade of  60%. Students have the opportunity until the end of a unit to turn in any late work. Any work not received by the end of the unit will be given a grade of  0%.
Late: 40% deduction

End of Unit: 0

 

Due dates are due dates all work is due on the date assigned regardless if a student is absent. Extensions are not given unless there are extreme circumstances that have been pre-approved by the teacher; these need to be submitted in writing at least 48 hours prior to the due date of the assignment, when possible. ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE BY THE BEGINNING OF CLASS/ ASSIGNED TIME ON CANVAS OR THEY WILL RECEIVE A LATE GRADE.

This policy does not apply to completion grades. Completion grades turned in late will receive NO credit, no exceptions.

Additionally

Since students have access to Chromebooks and most work will be completed online.  Which means students are still expected to turn in work even if they are absent from school the day it is due or it will be counted as late. 

 

“Canvas: The majority of assignments not completed on paper must be submitted on our learning platform,  Canvas. Assignments can be submitted a variety of ways including, uploading files, typing into text boxes, and sharing Google documents/presentations.  Students will be shown how to submit assignments on Canvas as needed. Individual assignments will indicate which method of submission on Canvas is expected.  If students need a refresher or have questions, they can access the Canvas Student Guide for specific instructions.  It is the student's responsibility to ensure assignments are submitted on time and to contact the instructor if there is a problem. Please note that student activity is logged while in Canvas so instructors will be able to see if the student opened the assignment, if there was any activity including a log of student activities during on-line tests and quizzes.  Students are not allowed to leave the testing window during assessments. Doing so is considered cheating and will be handled as set forth in the Porter Ridge HS handbook.

NOTICE: Although many assignments are submitted and graded in our learning platform, Canvas, the "final" grades shown may not be properly weighted and do not contain assignments that were not graded in Canvas.  For the student's official grades, please continue to access the parent portal through Powerschool. Login information should be the same as last year. If you need assistance accessing the parent portal, please contact the school.”

Final Exam: There will be a required final exam this year in American II. We will discuss this more as the year progresses.

 

Participation: 

Because this is a graduation requirement, it is essential that every student is in class, on-time, and prepared to learn every day. I want your best every day!

 

Discipline:

It is expected that every student show respect to all people and property in the classroom. Each student is guaranteed the right to an education, and disruptive behavior on the part of any student will not be tolerated.  All discipline issues will be addressed according to the Union Academy’s student handbook and enforced by an administrator. 

 

Attendance:

Be here! If you miss class, you will fall behind. We will take notes every day; it is recommended that you get notes from another student if you are out of school. The student is responsible for coming before or after school to collect missed assignments; the student is responsible for making up missed assignments as per expectations in the student handbook. 

 

Testing:

Tests are announced s in advance giving students adequate time to prepare and for most a study guide will be provided. If a student is absent the day before a test, that student will be expected to take the test if they return on test day or the next day they are present. I am available most mornings before school, and after school by request to make up tests. It is the student’s responsibility to take the test and remind the teacher of the missing test grade. 

 

Plagiarism: 

Plagiarism will not be tolerated on any level. Any student who copies, cheats, or takes information that is not originally theirs will receive a ZERO on the assignment, parent contact will be made, and administration will be informed. In the case that a student shares information with another via the internet or another source both students will receive a ZERO.  In other words do not share items with your friends via google drive or any other source.

Office Hours:

• Wednesday Mornings: 7:30-7:55 
• Afternoons 2:55- 3:15

Please let me know in advance that you plan to attend. Sign up sheets will be kept with the teacher.

*Students must come to office hours  directly from their 4th block class. Office Hours start promptly at 3:00pm. If a student has signed up and is not present by 3:15pm the student forfeits their right to office hours that day and must sign up for another day.   If a student has signed up but does not attend office hours, this will be documented. Any scheduling conflicts can be discussed with the teacher prior to that day. 

Classroom Guidelines:

 

• Follow all rules and guidelines found in the student handbook

• Be present and on time, seated in your assigned seat. 

• Respect and encourage yourself and others

• Have required materials 

• Be attentive during class, cell phones are to be put away as well as other distracting items.. 

• Drinks and snacks other than water are not allowed in class

• Follow all laptop rules and guidelines and stay on task during class

 

• Be Honest.

Disruptive Students will be sent immediately to the office
