AP Art History - Mr. D. Malady - G224

profile.jpg ABOUT ME: 24th year teaching, graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and Penn State

Purpose: The AP Art History course emphasizes a deep conceptual understanding of art historical concepts Students will develop the essential skills of visual and contextual analysis. By examining works of art from diverse cultures and the relationships among these works, students develop an understanding of global artistic traditions Students analyze works of art in their contexts, considering issues of patronage, gender, politics, religion, and ethnicity The interpretation of the work of art is based upon its intended use, audience, and the role of the artist and the work of art in its particular society Students will expand their knowledge of history, geography, politics, religion, languages, and literature, as they explore the story of people as told through the art they created.

Class Expectations: Classroom expectations are posted for everyone to follow. Failure to meet these expectations will result in corrective measurements ranging from teacher assigned detention to extra written work to additional cleaning duties to an office referral.

Grading Regulations Homework is on specific dates for each assignment. Due dates and requirements will be posted on the course canvas page daily. Any work that is late will be accepted, but at a penalty. Progress reports will also be given out midway through each six weeks grading period. Six weeks grades will be based on a cumulative point system. How will you be graded on your assignments? Writing quality is important, but so is having good working habits each class day, following format instructions, and turning your work in on time!

Hall Passes and Assigned Seats: I will have assigned seats. I will move you if you become a disturbance in the classroom. Hall passes are on my counter-top. One person may leave the room at a time. You fill out the pass and sign out.

Readings and Homework: The major portion of AP Art History is completing your daily  readings and completing your daily homework. Homework is posted on the canvas page. You will have readings to complete for each class day. Most of our readings come from museum websites and Khan Academy.

Sketchbooks: Sketchbooks are required for AP Art History . You will have daily notes to take in sketchbooks (yes, even in AP Art History you will have to draw!). Sketchbooks will be graded each six weeks. Sketchbooks should have some kind of spiral binding.

Study Guide: A suggested study guide is the Barron’s AP Art History Study Guide, 3rd edition, written by John Nici.

Khan Academy: Khan Academy will be a major resource for our class. Please sign-up for your own username.

Quizzes, Tests and Final Exam: Each 6 weeks there will be shorter quizzes and a longer tests. The quizzes and tests will consist of multiple choice questions and essay questions. The final exam will be given according to the UCPS calendar, the specific date and time is to be announced. The final exam will be the same format of the evaluations and project critiques, but longer (of course!). Quizzes and tests will be in the format of the AP Art History Exam.

AP Exam: The AP Exam is May 6, 2020 at noon. All students enrolled in this course are expected to take the AP Exam.

Honor Code Policy: There is an “Honor Code” posted in the front of the classroom which should be included and signed at the end of each written assignment and quiz done for this class. Artwork does not need the honor code.

Class Website and Laptops: We will use the course canvas page everyday!  All assignments will be posted here. We will use this website and review materials on it daily. Bring your laptop every day and be sure it is properly charged!
