Mrs. Andrews Class Syllabus

World History

The World History course will address several periods with a key focus of study from the mid 15th century to present. Historians group the standards of this course in a way that reflects accepted periodization. The learning standards of this course have been written to focus around a basic core of chronologically-organized periods and events in history in order to have a set of learning standards that can be reasonably taught and learned with some depth and not just memorization of facts, within the time available for classroom instruction. However, local districts and teachers are encouraged to elaborate on what is included here, to add topics that they feel are important, and to organize material into concept-based units of study.

Tutoring

Tutoring needs to be scheduled within 24 hours so that rides can be attained. This will also allow me to set up proper materials and plan to ensure that you get the most out of your tutoring session. Tutoring begins at 3:15 promptly and ends at 4:00. During this time, students can request extra help, make up missed work due to absences, and complete test corrections. *Come to tutoring BEFORE it is too late! Do NOT wait until you are failing!!

Daily Work and Homework

Students are expected to complete all in-class assignments. If assignments are not completed during class time, students are required to complete it as homework. Due dates for homework assignments (additional to classwork), tests, quizzes, and projects will be posted on the white board and on Canvas.

Test corrections

All students have the opportunity to complete test corrections. Students will receive half credit for the answers that they have corrected so long as they complete corrections in the proper format. This can bring students up an entire letter grade.

Classroom Rules and Expectations

  1. No cellphones for any reason (unless stated otherwise by me)! – If students need to contact parents/guardians, they can do so from the front office. If parents/guardians need to contact their child, they can do so by calling the front office. Cell phones will be confiscated from students and calls will be made home to make parent/guardian. If this problem is reoccurring, students will surrender their phones until the end of the day when the parent/guardian must pick it up from the office. Further consequences will be write-ups leading to detention as well as giving up cell phones at the beginning of class as a preventative measure.
  2. Come to class ON TIME and prepared. This means that you have ALL required materials, a positive attitude, and you are at your seat before the bell rings.
  3. Treat others as you wish to be treated. There is a zero tolerance for bullying and severe consequences will follow.
  4. Respect your classmates, teacher, property, and yourself. Do not write on desks, break items, disrupt learning time, act rude towards others, and respect your own education. You deserve it!
  5. Students do not dismiss themselves. I will reserve time at the end of class for students to pack up so long as they respect my time and effort. Students must be seated before the bell rings to be released.
  6. All drinks except water are prohibited from my classroom to avoid spills. Students may snack in my class if they clean up after themselves. I reserve the right to take away this privilege if students do not comply.
  7. Follow all school rules as stated in the student handbook. (No cellphones, no headphones, no hoods, be in dress code, etc.)

Class Attendance

Students are expected to attend class every day on time and prepared. Coming to class will help you succeed. If you put in an effort in class, you will have more personal time after school.

Bathroom Policy

Students will be allotted one bathroom pass a week. If students do not use their bathroom passes, they are able to turn them in for 1 point extra credit at the end of the six weeks. The extra credit will go towards your lowest test grade. Passes cannot be shared. If students go to the restroom, they MUST leave their cell phone on my desk and sign out and back in. Students may not use the restroom during teacher instruction (during notes) or during the first 15 or last 15 minutes of class. Only one student may use the restroom at a time.

****MOVIES****

PLEASE be aware that throughout the semester we may watch whole or parts of movies. Here is a list of possible movies, but we will not watch all and there is a possibility of not watching any. If you object to your child watching any of these movies, please make a note in the comments section below, and I will find an alternative assignment during its viewing.

300, A Knight’s Tale, Amazing Grace, Black Hawk Down, Gangs of New York, Gladiator, Hotel Rwanda, King Arthur, Kingdom of Heaven, The Last Samurai, Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan, Munich, Pearl Harbor, Band of Brothers, and Saving Private Ryan

Academic Honesty

Your expectation is to abide by the MHS Academic Honor Code, included in the MHS Student Handbook. Cheating and plagiarism WILL NOT be tolerated and possible consequences include being asked to re-do the assignment, losing partial credit, and/or receiving a zero. I will dedicate significant class time to educating you regarding what academic honesty is and how you can avoid being dishonest, but please keep in mind that it is ultimately your responsibility to act with integrity.

Grading Scale

I use the point system. Tests and projects will be worth more points than classwork and quizzes. Students can determine their average by taking their total number of points earned and dividing it by the total number of points possible.
