Technical Theater

Syllabus

Instructor:  Mr. Schulz

 

Technical Theater will introduce students to the various aspects of craft of theater.  These will include stage design, lighting design, sound design, and prop construction, and makeup.    Students will learn the art of being a member of a stage crew.  Students will work to create all technical aspects of theater required for stage production.  Students will work as individuals and in groups. This is a performance based class, and students are expected to perform.

Goals: 

Students will work with stage model building.

Students will read drama texts from a dramaturgical perspective and design appropriate performance elements.

Students will understand stage layout.

Students will develop appropriate group work habits for excellent craft production.

Students will explore various aspects of technical theater.

Requirements:

Regular attendance is required.  Since this is technical performance based class, daily grades in performance will be given.  A performance based class requires total focus and participation.  The inappropriate use of cellphones/tablets will result in an immediate grade deduction for that day.

Quizzes and tests should be expected, but they may be performance based rather than written.

A research presentation on technical theater will be required.

Students will be expected to attend and critique a live performance either at Parkwood or another venue.  Movies are not acceptable.  Students must submit a program with their critique.

Materials for class: 

A quality clear plastic ruler, pencils, colored pencils, drawing compass, plastic triangle

Participation: 30%

Homework: 5%

Research and presentation: 40%

Quizzes: 25%
