Sixth Grade Syllabus
Week 1 Intro to Healthful Living
- What is Health?
- 4 parts of health: Mental, Social, Emotional, and Physical.
Stress Management
- Apply Structured thinking (decision making and goal setting) to benefit emotional well-being.
- Analyze the potential outcome of positive stress management techniques.
- Analyze the relationship between healthy expression of emotions, mental health, and healthy behavior.
Week 2 Interpersonal Communication & Relationships
- Understand healthy and effective interpersonal communication and relationships
- Apply strategies and skills for developing and maintaining healthy relationships.
Week 3 Nutrition
- Analyze tools such as Dietary Guidelines and Food Facts Labels as they relate to the planning of healthy nutrition and fitness.
- Apply strategies to consume a variety of nutrient dense foods and beverages in moderation.
- Apply lifelong nutrition and health-related fitness concepts to enhance quality of life.
Week 4 Tobacco
- Analyze marketing and advertising of tobacco companies in terms of the strategies they use to influence youth experimentation with their products.
- Explain the immediate social and physical consequences of tobacco use, including spit tobacco.
- Summarize the short-term and long term effects of being exposed to secondhand smoke.
- Use effective assertive refusal skills to avoid pressure to use tobacco.
Week 5 Reproductive Health and Safety
- Understanding the changes that occur during puberty and adolescence.
- Select methods of prevention based on the modes of transmission of communicable diseases.
Week 6 Diseases
- Understand wellness, disease prevention, and recognition of symptoms.
- Analyze health information and products.
- Analyze measures necessary to protect the environment.
Seventh Grade Health Syllabus
Week 1 Intro to Healthful living and stress management.
- Review what the students have learned in the previous year.
- Analyze the relationship between healthy expression of emotions, mental health, and healthy behaviors.
- Evaluate positive stress management strategies.
- Apply help-seeking strategies for depression and mental disorders.
Week 2 Nutrition
- Review what students have learned the previous year.
- Apply tools(My Plate, Food Fact Label) to plan and employ healthy nutrition and fitness.
- Apply strategies to consume a variety of nutrient dense foods and beverages in moderation.
- Analyze the relationship of nutrition, fitness, and healthy weight management to the prevention of diseases such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and eating disorders.
- Apply lifelong nutrition and health-related fitness concepts to enhance quality of life.
Week 3 Tobacco
- Review what the students have learned in the previous year.
- Understand the health risks associated with tobacco.
- Apply risk reduction behaviors to protect self and others from tobacco.
Week 4 Alcohol and Other Drugs
- Understand the health risks associated with alcohol and other drug use.
- Apply risk reduction behaviors to protect self and others from alcohol and other drug use.
Week 5 Personal and Consumer Health
- Review what the students have learned in the previous year.
- Understand wellness, disease prevention, and recognition of symptoms.
- Analyze the immune system in terms of the organs, their functions, and their interrelationships.
- Evaluate health information and products.
Analyze necessary steps to prevent and respond to unintentional injury.
Week 6 Reproductive Health and Safety
- Review what the students have learned in the previous year.
- Understand healthy and effective interpersonal communication and relationships.
- Remember abstinence from sexual activity outside of marriage as a positive choice for young people.
- Apply strategies that develop and maintain reproductive and sexual health.
