Required Materials: Folders, Music, Instrument, Pencils, Paper, Maintenance Items

6th Grade ONLY: Essential Elements Book 1 for your instrument

Participation: Participation in this class is very important. Proper rehearsal and concert etiquette is expected from all students. Practicing at home is expected. Remember: the more you practice, the better you become and your grade, participation, and role in the band improves.

Outside of class obligations: There will be concerts that will occur outside of class. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the band director of and conflicts BEFORE they occur. Concert and dress rehearsal conflicts need to be approved one week prior to the concert. Absences due to illness must be accompanied by a doctor’s note within two days of your return to school. If you are part of Jazz Band or the Carowinds group, specific information regarding those activities will be sent out at a later date.

Concerts: Concerts are extremely important for this class. They are designed to give you an example of the world of a professional musician.

Concert dress:

Men: Black shirt, black dress pants, black socks, black shoes, and a black belt is necessary.

Women: Black shirt with black pants or skirt or black dress, black closed-toe shoes, dresses and skirts must be longer than knee length and three-quarter sleeves must be worn (can be accompanied with a sweater, cardigan, long sleeve undershirt, etc.)

Grading Scale and Policy: Each week, students will receive a participation grade. This grade will include behavior and being prepared for class. 10 points will be taken off for each of the following: excessive talking, disruption, not having instruments/music/pencil, and refusal to play. If you ever have a question about this grade please contact me. I will keep a detailed record of what goes on in class.

We will also have playing and written tests and assignments.

Concerts will be two test grades. Failure to attend, tardiness, and lack of appropriate concert dress will result in grade deductions.

In addition to the above, we will follow the school’s grading and discipline procedures.
