Course Description:

Students enrolled in the Honors Chemistry will gain more experience that will help them achieve Scientific literacy. Scientific literacy is defined as “the knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and processes required for scientific decision-making participation in civic and cultural affairs, and economic productivity” (nc.publicschools.org). In this class this means that students will use their learned knowledge to preform hands-on lab experiments and write them up in a formal way and read scientific papers so that they can gain an understanding of how scientists communicate with each other. They will also practice applying classroom knowledge to everyday events around them to gain a better understanding of the world they live in.

Course Competencies/ Learning Objectives

Students who successfully complete Honors Chemistry will be competent in the following areas:

  • Students will be able to analyze the structure of atoms and ions.
  • Students will be able to understand the bonding that occurs in simple compounds in terms of bond type, strength and properties.
  • Students will be able to understand the physical and chemical properties of atoms based on their position in the Periodic Table.
  • Students will be able to understand the relationship among pressure, temperature, volume and phase.
  • Students will be able to analyze chemical reactions in terms of quantities, products formation, and energy.
  • Students will be able to understand the factor affecting rate of reaction and chemical equilibrium
  • Students will be able to understand solutions and the solution process.

Grading policy
