Course Description

This is a preparatory course for the English I advanced course in 8th grade.  We will emphasize critical reading and thinking skills in our study of various genres, written expression, grammar, and word origins.

Units of Study

Fiction: Short stories and novels

A Christmas Carol

Historical Fiction and Holocaust/ WWII themed literature

Science Fiction: Utopias/Dystopias

Great Books Program

William and Mary; A Decade of Change (1940's)

Oral Tradition Tales

Nonfiction/informational texts

Drama/Shakespeare

Poetry

Latin/Greek stems

Grammar/ Writing

Grades

90-100 = A

80-89 = B

70-79 = C

60-69 = D

Tests  = 3x

Quizzes= 2x

Class work and Homework = 1x

Projects and writing work will be graded according to provided rubrics with each assignment

Tutoring

I am available for extra help most mornings before homeroom.  Please let me know a day in advance so I can plan ahead.

Parent Conferences

Tuesdays are designated parent conference days at SVMS.   Please email  or call the school to set up a conference when needed.
