Schafer- English I -S1                                   

Welcome to English 1 CP/ Honors; I am very excited about the new school year and look forward to getting this year started!   This class will be fast moving and will have its challenges. Together we will make it through unscathed and hopefully a lot more knowledgeable! Please contact me with questions either through Canvas or through email.

Supplies Needed:  Due Wednesday, August 28th

  • Spiral College ruled Notebook (for my class ONLY)
  • Folder
  • Loose Leaf paper
  • Blue/Black and RED pens
  • Pencils
  • Highlighters (a least 5 colors)
  • Index cards (200 )
  • 1 ½ to 2 inch binder (my class only)
  • 5 dividers

Course Information:

  • Short Stories/Literature Elements
    • Most Dangerous Game, Scarlet Ibis, Cask of Amontillado, and a few other short stories
  • Novel Units
    • Both sections will be reading Animal Farm
      • CP- Of Mice and Men
      • Honors- To Kill a Mockingbird
    • We will be discussing themes of racism, sexism, classism, empathy, friendship, justice, and more
    • Students will explore the time periods in which all the novels take place and research major events, people, movements, and groups that would have played a major role during that time.
  • Poetry/ Drama
    • Learn poetic terms and discuss various poems from our textbook
    • Read and discuss themes found within Romeo and Juliet
      • Discover Shakespeare and look at 15th Century England
      • Recitations to be expected

 

  • Vocabulary/Grammar
    • We will cover at least 7 units; 2 weeks per unit.
    • Every other Monday a new unit will be given
    • 2 assignments and a Quiz will be assigned per unit
      • 1st Thursday- flashcards due
      • 2nd Thursday Vocabulary Sentences OR Vocabulary Squares will be due
      • 2nd Friday will be a quiz over that unit.

 Grading Policies:

  1. I am on a total points system. Everything counts and is considered important, so make sure you do all that is assigned.
  2. Many assignments in my class are correctable if the student makes an effort to do so. Low grades on something you don’t understand the first time can be fixed; however, tests, and quizzes are a one-time shot, so STUDY!
  3. Late work will not be taken after 2 days of the due date. It will automatically be dropped 20% no matter how late it is. (If it is due on a Friday, it will not be taken after Monday.)

Expectations:

  1. Be respectful to others and our classroom
  2. Lots of writing (every single day and some at home)
  3. Reading outside of class and a variety of reading in class (OLD stories, new stories, novels, articles, etc.)
  4. Weekly Homework 
  5. Revising and re-doing things until they are better
  6. Working bell to bell everyday
  7. NO eating in class
  8. Cheating will be penalized
  9. Check CANVAS for the DAILY schedule and Assignments
  10. Bathroom breaks are permitted, but if abused, the privilege will be taken.
