Course Overview:

Throughout the course, we will read several works of British literature and write essays in preparation for your college English classes.  The class is organized chronologically and works are selected to prepare you for the English IV NC Final Exam.

Unit 1: Anglo Saxons (Beowulf and Grendel)

Unit 2: Middle Ages (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Canterbury Tales)

Unit 3: Renaissance (Shakespearan tragedy)

Unit 4: Romantic (Selected poems)

Unit 5: Modern (1984)

Classroom Expectations:

  1. As a student in this class, you are expected to:
  2. Be on time and prepared to learn every day.
  3. Be respectful of our learning environment by actively participating in class activities and being non-disruptive.
  4. Be cooperative and respectful of other students and the teacher.

II .Academic honesty is required in this class.  I take the honor code very seriously.  Do your own work, work hard, and ask for extra help if needed. Plagiarism or cheating will result in failure on an assignment. Cheating includes copying homework and aiding others in cheating.  Students will submit all formal work to www.turnitin.com.

III. Late work (work is considered late for any reason other than absence) is accepted for no more than 50% (or half credit). This applies to all work that is not turned in when the assignment is due.  For example, if homework is not turned in at the beginning of class, it is considered late.   Major writing assignments (formal essays) must be turned in on time regardless of absence to avoid a point deduction.  These can be shared as a Google Doc and submitted to turnitin.com. Missed work for absences must be made up in a timely manner.

  1. Tardies will be handled per school policy (4 tardies=office referral).
  2. Do not use cell phones or engage in non-English class-related computer use during class time. Phones must be put away to avoid distraction and to encourage engagement with class activities.
  3. Class Grading: Grades are computed using the following weights: Tests and Major Essays are worth 45%; Quizzes/Major Projects are worth 35%: Daily Assignments and Homework are worth 20%. Extra credit assignments are given only occasionally and are provided to all students. No individual extra credit is accepted; grades are not bumped at the end of the semester, so an 89% is an 89% and not a 90. Work consistently throughout the semester, and always be prepared for daily reading quizzes.

VII. The following supplies are required:

  1. Novels: You will need to purchase up to two novels for the semester. Information will be provided in class as to titles and editions of the book you will need. Books can be ordered online or purchased at a local bookstore.
  2. Required Class Supplies:
  3. 3 ring binder (1 to 2 inch) with five divider tabs (label: Anglo Saxon, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Romantic, and Modern). You may combine your binder with another class, but be sure to have it organized with dividers and bring it to class daily.
  4. Composition notebook (to be used in English class only)
  5. College-rule paper/Pens and pencils
  6. Chromebook and charger (bring daily)
  7. Optional Supplies: hi-lighter, colored pencils or markers

VIII. Final Reminders:

  1. You are expected to keep in communication with me in the event of your absence, especially if you miss a major assignment, quiz, or test. Always check to ensure that you have been given any missed work.  Schedule makeup tests promptly.  If you are missing work, you will be required to attend Warrior Block.
  2. You are expected to complete homework. If you do not have time/desire to complete honor’s level work, then you may want to consider taking CP English IV.  CP English IV covers the same basic material without rigorous outside reading or writing assignments.  Your grade in this class does depend on some outside preparation and assignments.  Plan accordingly.
  3. It is important to put forth effort daily. My goal is to help you along the way, but only you can determine your ultimate success.
