Spanish 1
Instructor: Ms. Ginger Polk, Room 808
Parkwood High School— 2019-2020
Spanish 1 is an introduction to the study of a second language through the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Culture, geography, and grammar are parts of this course. Students have limited or no knowledge of the language at the beginning of the course.
Essential Standards Addressed:
- Use the language to engage in interpersonal communication. (Speak to a partner)
- Understand words and concepts presented in the language. (Understand when spoken to)
- Use the language to present information to an audience. (Speak to the class)
- Compare the students’ culture and the target culture. (Discuss your culture vs. others)
Use www.pearsonsuccess.net (Links to an external site.) to access our Realidades 1 book. Use gingerpolk1 and spanish1 as username and password. Books 2-3 are also available for you to use as a reference or for vocabulary. The corresponding workbook pages are at the bottom of each page as it relates to the activity. THIS IS A GREAT TOOL!!!
The book is divided into themes.

Expectations:
At all levels, students will actively engage in listening, reading, writing, and speaking Spanish. Students are also to be positive and respectful of the learning atmosphere in our classroom. Learning a language takes courage and a lot of practice. It takes time and patience. One must study, memorize, complete homework and dedicate at least 20 minutes each night to the weekly vocabulary. You will be able to read and write sentences by the end of the course. You will be able to talk about many things about yourself. You will present this information to the class.
Treat others as you want to be treated.
Be prepared for class.
Be respectful to the teacher and your classmates.
Be responsible for your learning.
Follow directions.
Do not use your cellphone in class unless I have given you permission.
Use the chrome book when permission is given.
Follow the school rules as well as the Student Conduct Code at Parkwood.
Failure to follow the expectations above may result in the following consequences:

Extra Credit:
Extra credit is available each chapter. These are considered optional assignments and can be completed to boost your grade.
Hall Pass Policy:
Use this privilege wisely. Do not take advantage of this. If I feel you are misusing your privilege it will be taken away. I do not give Hall Passes. I trust that you will respect me as I will respect you.
Grading Procedures: I grade by points
Grade Scale: Categories:
A=90-100 Tests/Projects = 100 points or more
B=80-89 Classwork= 20, 30 or 40 points
C=70-79 Homework = 10 points
D=60-69 Quizzes = 30 or 40 points
F= Below 60
Late Work Policy:
Assigned work will be expected to be quality work and handed in on time. If an assignment is missed due to an excused absence, 2 days will be given to make up the assignment. If a student needs extra time to complete an assignment, the student can complete it at home and turn it in at that time. There is a one day limit on late work to be turned in. One day late work will result in a reduction of points depending on the assignment.
Food and Drink Policy:
Food and drink are allowed in my room. You may have water with you during class time. Gum: “chew responsibly”. Please clean up after yourself and do not leave trash for anyone else to pick up. If this becomes a problem then the food and drink privilege will be taken away.
Arrival and Dismissal:
When the bell rings, be ready to start. The end of class bell does not dismiss you. I do. Do not stand at the door and wait for the bell. You will stay seated until the bell.
Tutoring:
Tutoring will take place at scheduled times set up by the student and the teacher. Students with a C or less should attend tutoring at least once a week.
Cheating Policy:
Cheating will not be tolerated. If you are caught or suspected of cheating you will receive a zero on that assignment. Parent contact will be made in these instances.
Final Exam Exemptions: If you have an A average and 3 unexcused absences you do NOT have to take my exam. If you have a B average and 2 unexcused absences you do NOT have to take my exam. The county made the exam. It is a 3 hour exam and is NOT on the computer. There are listening, reading, writing, grammar, and speaking parts. It is a huge privilege to exempt this exam.
