Course Description:

This course prepares students to locate, secure, keep, and change careers. Emphasis is placed on self-assessment of characteristics, interests, and values; education and career exploration; evaluation of career information and creation of a career plan. Based on the National Career Development Guidelines, skills learned in this course include, but are not limited to communications, interpersonal skills, problem solving, personal management and teamwork. English language arts are reinforced. A required district created assessment will be administered at both the mid-term and the end of this course.  Additionally, there will be a state created final exam which will account for 25% of the student’s final course grade.

 Course Blueprint—Upon Completion of this course the student will:

  1. Understand Personal and Social Development.
  2. Understand Educational Achievement and Lifelong Learning.
  3. Understand Career Management Over a Lifetime.

 Materials:

Our primary resource is our Chromebooks. Please ensure that you bring yours fully charged EVERYDAY! Students should also have writing utensils, colored pencils, and highlighters for any handouts.

*Please note that in addition to these course grades, our State-issued final exam will count for 25% of your final semester grade.

In-class assignments consist of class participation, vocabulary building activities, and module work. Assignments that are submitted after the due date will be assessed a 10 points per day penalty deduction. A minimum of 50 points will be awarded for all assignments that are submitted.  Otherwise, failure to complete an assignment may result in a grade of 0. Students may make arrangements with me to come before or after school to make up any missed work. No excuses.

Weekly Activities:

(1) WarmUps, (2) Notetaking & Discussion, (3) Independent Assignments, (4) Collaborative Groups (Labs, Games etc…), (5) Exit Tickets, (6) Quizzes (occasional Tests), (7) Presentations.

Attendance Policy:

Students that exceed 10 absences will not receive credit for the course unless reversed by MHS Administration. It is the responsibility of the student to make up any missed assignments. Three days will be given to submit missed work without any penalty.

 Electronic Device Policy:

Students will not use electronic devices, for any purpose, during teacher led instruction. Students will be granted usage permission at the discretion of the teacher.  We do use our phones for set responsibilities. In cases of personal or family emergencies, the teacher must be notified prior to the beginning of class. Failure to comply with the above rules and regulations with result in the following:

1st Offense: Verbal warning.  2nd Offense: Electronic device will be confiscated and placed in “electronic device jail” but will be returned at the end of class.  3rd Offense: Electronic device will be confiscated and placed in “electronic device jail.” Student will also attend detention at the teacher’s discretion, and receive a phone call home to their parent. Continual offenses will result in an office referral.

Class Rules:

  1. Come to class with an open mind and a positive attitude.
  2. Have all appropriate materials ready and available upon arrival.
  3. Respect yourself and your team members.
  4. Be in control of yourself and your property at all times. This includes controlling your voice level, your belongings, and handling personal health and hygiene before or after class.
  5. Be on time to class.

Please refer to the student handbook and school policy for rules governing student conduct and behavior. The above are classroom specific and will apply.

Tardy Policy:

 Daily Procedures:

  • Upon entry into the classroom, all conversations should be lowered to a normal conversation level.
  • Students will begin class with all appropriate materials (notebook, pen/pencil and etc….)
  • Students will make sure all book bags are free from all walkways.
  • The daily agenda will be posted on the class Canvas account. Students will begin the first assignment when the bell rings.
  • The teacher will direct class as to what activities will follow.
  • Upon direction, the last 5 minutes of class will be reserved for students to collect their personal belongings and restore their work area back to the way it was upon entry into the classroom.
  • The teacher will dismiss the class, not the bell.

Non-compliance to any of the classroom rules or procedures in addition to the policies of MHS and Union County Public Schools may result in the following consequences:

  • Proximity/Eye Contact
  • Student Conference
  • Loss of Privileges
  • Detention/Parental Contact
  • Office Referral

My Responsibility to you:

The relationship between staff and students should be one of cooperation, understanding, and mutual respect. The staff has the responsibility to provide an atmosphere conducive to learning and to motivate each student to perform to his or her capacity. The staff is expected to model the behavior expected of students in staff-student relationships. Additionally, staff is to at all times, maintain a strictly professional and courteous relationship with students.
