All Classes:  You may have noticed on the 6th Grade Canvas page, a sort of calendar for office hours. I feel for the subject area of science, it is more beneficial to be able to answer any questions you may have in a one to one email. Know that you can shoot me an email at any time I will answer it in a timely manner. I hope everyone is doing well and keeping your mind and body healthy

June 8-10

As we come to the end of the 2020 school year, I hope to leave you will one more tidbit of knowledge that may help you avoid an unpleasant experience. Please take a close look at the two pictures below of copperhead snakes. Take the time to watch the short Discovery Ed. video clip that will give you a little more information about this venomous snake that is quite often found around our area. One tip for identifying baby copperheads are their yellow tipped tail. An adult will have markings that look somewhat like Hershey kisses if you look along its side. Unlike the man who has been trained in handling snakes, you should NEVER try to pick up a copperhead, but it is very beneficial to know what one looks like so you can stay clear.

Week of June 1 - 5, 2020
We have just about made it to the end of our virutal learning!  This week we will be looking at the processes of pollination and photosynthese in plants, as well as the cycling of carbon and nitrogen on Earth. Due to the problems with Brainpop last week, and Discovery Education this week, I am limiting our sites to Flocabulary and Windows to the Universe. As usual, just click on the ASSIGNMENTS TAB to find the four activities for this week.

SPACE X (first private space flight company) is scheduled to launch 2 NASA astronauts today (Wednesday, May 27th)  This is the first launch on American soil since 2011. Watch the live coverage if you can. Maybe some day, you too will be able to travel in space!

Week of May 25 - 29, 2020
This week we will be investigating the rock cycle and how the breakdown of rock leads to the formation of soil.  You will have 3 main assignments this week that you can find by clicking on the Assignments tab. If you have any trouble submitting your answers for activity 1 and 2 in the textbox, feel free to submit them through a Google Doc. Activity 3 is a Flocabulary assignment for which there is no need to submit through Canvas as I will see your progress on my teacher page for Flocabulary.  **Please note that activity 2 is a Discovery Education video, so be sure to OPEN DISCOVERY EDUCATION ON YOUR STUDENT PAGE FIRST so that the link wll open for you.  This video is 12:52 minutes long. You may want to take notes as you view this video in order to more easily answer the questions for submission.

Today I am working through some professional development related to your "virtual learning" that will officially begin on Wednesday, April 1st. Beginning on April 1st, you will see a new module titled, "Welcome Back" that will contain suggested assignments and activities for you to complete. My plan is to post the assignments for the entire week so that you can work on them at your own speed, and in your own time.

03/27/20  It is a beautiful day!!  Go outside and make some observations in nature. How many different kinds of flowers can you find that are blooming?  How many different kind of insects can you find?   Try to find a Anolis carolinensis - Wikipediaalso known as a Carolina Anole!!

03/26/20  Bored from staying at home yet?  Keeping learning about the effects of tectonic plate movement by watching NATURAL PHENOMENA: EARTHQUAKES, VOLCANOES & OTHER EARTH MOVEMENTS. This is a Discovery Education video, so be sure to open D.E. on your student page first!

03/25/20  Check out Brainpop's video named Tsunami. You will learn how earthquakes at sea can create these epic waves of water that are capable of traveling miles inland.

03/24/20  Have you ever wondered why some buildings fall during an earthquake, while others remain standing?
Quake it Don't Shake it" is an optional D.E. interactive that you may like to try to see what factors engineers consider when trying to build earthquake proof buildings. Start with the first tab on the left to learn your MISSION and work to the right, clicking on each tab in order.

03/23/20  Other than earthquakes, another very observable effect of tectonic plate movement is the eruption of volcanoes. Another way that volcanoes can erupt is by a "HOTSPOT".  The link below, 2018 Eruption of Kilauea: How it Happened, is a very interesting video with excellent footage of some very unique volcanic activity.

03/20/20  Nine years ago, on March 11, 2011, a 9.1 earthquake hit Japan. If you would like to learn more about this MEGAQUAKE, go to my Earthquake Module and watch the top link to learn more about this history making quake.  As you watch, notice the other events that earthquakes can produce such as LIQUEFACTION and TSUNAMIS.  *note: this is a Discovery Education video, so be sure to open Discovery Education from your student startup page.

03/19/20
HAPPY SPRING EQUINOX!  Do you remember the special position of the Earth in its orbit for this first day of spring?  Check out
