Reviewing the Elements of Art ~ Learning About the Principle of Design ~ Art Folder Covers

8th Graders will review the elements of art to learn how the elements of art create the principles of design as well as introductory art vocabulary.  Visual art students will paint a gray scale background and create a graffiti name (tag) for the cover of their art folders.  Students will focus on composition, line, color, space, shape, balance, and unity for their first art project.

Art Project #2 ~ Students will create a positive/negative space simple geometric shape grid piece of  art to  reinforce their newfound knowledge of the elements of art.

Art Project #3 ~ Identity Book with Mrs. Nair
Mrs. Nair, this years student teacher, will be using the theme "identity" to guide students in creating an explosion book!

Art Project #4: Emotion Self Portraits
Mrs. Nair guided 8th grade semester long students in creating a self portrait using various mixed media techniques.

Art Project #5:  Clay Fishes
Ms. Peppard will be teaching the rest of the semester. Thank you to Mrs. Nair for a great couple of months!
For our last unit 8th grade art students will be working with clay.  Students will learn clay vocabulary and techniques to create a textured relief fish.

  • Please note that a quiz on the elements of art, principles of design, and introductory art terms will be given at the end of the three weeks.
  • Students are graded on all art projects based a set of criteria given during instructions and how well they executed those directions while they are creating their master pieces.
  • Parents/Guardians, please ask your art student what they are creating and learning in class! Art is a subject and it's not easy. Validate what your student learns not just in their core subjects but in ALL subject areas!
