I look forward to working with your student this semester in Food & Nutrition 1. This semester we will focus on the following key areas; individual nutritional needs, the fundamentals of food production, kitchen and meal management, food groups and their preparation, and time and resource management. We will also focus and model our classroom procedures around the workplace. We will explore careers in the food industry and beyond as well as important workplace and teamwork skills. Classroom Expectations
- Come to class with a good attitude.
- Bring required supplies to class.
- Students should follow any and all directions.
- Students should follow all school rules and guidelines listed in planner.
- Class time is not nap time.
Labs
Labs are a very important part of this class. They are a performance based test of concepts studied. Labs are an excellent way for students to get hands on experience as well as a way to practice and fully understand classroom concepts. However, labs are a privilege and the class can be taught without them. A lab rules contract & safety agreement must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to school in order for a student to be able to participate. Foods labs require maturity, group cooperation, and safety for all involved. I have the right to exclude a student from lab for misbehavior or compromising the safety of themselves or other students. Lab make up assignments for missed labs are located in the classroom.
Notebook Component
Students will be responsible for keeping all class handouts and assignments in an interactive notebook. Students must bring 3 (70 page) spiral notebooks for this purpose (refer to Needed Materials list above). We will organize the notebook with class notes and assignments. It is essential that your student have their organized notebook each day in class. A lost notebook is the student’s responsibility to replace. It is also their responsibility to replace all work that was in the missing notebook. A sample notebook will be available for students to reference if they are absent. Notebook checks will occur approximately every two weeks and other times as needed. Failure to complete in class assignments will result in a student not being able to participate in labs associated with the classwork.
Make-up Work
Students will have 5 days to turn in any make-up work from an absence. It is the responsibility of the student to pick up missed assignments from designated area in class. Students missing tests, labs, or quizzes will need to arrange a time to make up those assignments within the 5 day period.
Cell Phones/Electronic Devices
Please refer to your student’s handbook for cell phone and electronic device policies. Please refrain from calling or texting your student during class. There are times where cell phone use during school/class will be allowed. These times will be outlined by the teacher/school on a case by case basis.
Cheating
Cheating is a serious offence that will result in a grade of zero for all guilty parties. There is a zero tolerance for cheating in my class. It shows better character to lose points for unfinished or incorrect work than to get a zero for cheating.
Dress Code
See student handbook for dress code updates. The lab dress code is listed in the Lab Contract.
