Course Description and Syllabus

Math III progresses from the standards learned in Math I and Math II. In addition to these standards, Math III extends to include algebraic concepts such as: the complex number system, inverse functions, trigonometric functions and the unit circle. Math III also includes the geometric concepts of conics and circles.  Areas of applications include home, recreation, work, consumer issues, public policy, and scientific investigations.

Math III students are expected to perform at a high level.  Math III students need to become reflective thinkers, initiators of their learning, problem seekers as well as solvers and active in their learning processes.

Math III is designed to prepare students for Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus and AP Statistics.  Appropriate technology including the manipulation of calculators and the use of application software will be used regularly for instruction and student assessment.  This is by far the most difficult mathematics course that your student has taken. To be successful each student will need to complete each and every assignment, ask questions, think, participate in classroom discussions, study and in some cases come to me for tutoring.  Falling behind in this course is a sure solution for failure.

Each student should have their own TI-83 Plus graphing calculator as well as a nongraphing calculator as part of this course.

Students are most successful when students, parents and teachers work together.  Please make sure that your student has the proper materials, rest, and is present and on time each day.

I will do my part in teaching your student and I expect your student to do their part in learning.  I welcome communication with you as frequently as needed.  Should you have questions, concerns, or comments please contact me at school (704.296.3088) or by email (Gerald.Sheppard@ucps.k12.nc.us).  I will return your message as soon as possible.

You are welcome to attend class anytime you desire.  Please check-in at the main office upon your arrival on campus.

Grading Policy

Grading will be based on a point system where each assignment will be evaluated based on its relevance to the overall scope of the curriculum.

NO WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED ON PAPER REMOVED FROM A SPIRAL NOTEBOOK.
