Welcome to Mr. Cochran's Computer Engineering Technology I Class.

I am extremely excited to get to know each of you as new students in the Computer Engineering Academy. This course is derived directly from the CompTIA A+ 220-1101 study materials. This will prepare you for the CompTIA A+ 220=1101 certification exam.

I believe in bringing real, current, and relevant training into the classroom. We have brand new Lenovo desktops on the way for us to play with, take apart, put together, etc. Lots of new toys coming in so we'll be able to get both instructional and hands-on with just about all of it.

Required Supplies

Pencil or Pen

Notebook - notes will be required. The class will be structured so that after instruction on a module has ended, you will begin re-reading materials to take hand-written notes. Those handwritten notes will be allowed as a resource for most, but not all, quizzes or tests.

Big brain - You will get a lot of information in this course. Be prepared to listen intently, take lots of notes and prepare to take the 220-1101 certification exam at a Pearson Vue testing center near the end of the semester. This investment now will help you prepare as you get into 2nd semester.

Internet Policy

Students will use the school network and Internet on a daily basis to access instructional websites and project resources. All students are expected to abide by the UCPS Acceptable Use policy when using the school network. The streaming of audio and/or video, playing games on the computer without permission, the use of chat rooms, Facebook, instant messenger, email, twitter, proxy servers or using the Internet for non-educational purposes is prohibited. Violations will result in disciplinary action.

Honor Code

The work that you submit represents your learning, and so it represents you. Therefore, your work must demonstrate both your integrity and honor. Anyone caught cheating or plagiarizing on any assignment, from homework to exams, will face strict penalties. ---J.Kasler

While some of the materials are available online, it is EXPECTED that you will put in the work and the effort and complete the materials using your brain and allowed resources. Surfing the web for answers or using someone else's work is considered "against the rules". Do your own work, achieve your own results and build your own future.

Mr Cochran’s Classroom Procedures:

Attendance	1. You are expected to be available for class the entire 90 minutes. You should be in your seat with all non-class materials, such as cell phones and ear buds, stowed (put away) prior to the bell.
Questions/Help	1. Always read instructions before asking for help. 2. Should you still need help, simply raise your hand and I'll visit your station or call upon you.
Equipment	1. Use only the equipment assigned to you. 2. Leave computer settings alone, they are not to be changed. This includes screen backgrounds for yourself and others. 3. Handle equipment with extreme care, you may be held responsible for repairs. 4. Intentionally damaging or causing disruptions with equipment will result in disciplinary actions. 5. Your cell phone and ear buds are NOT part of the equipment authorized to be used within' the classroom. They should be put away prior to class start. Your devices should be charged prior to school so that you are not in need of charging during class time.
Out of Seat	1. I expect you to be engaged in your personal work for my class. If you have completed all available work in my class please let me know so that you can engage in work for other classes.
Talking	1. You are expected to be engaged in work related to Network Engineering I unless otherwise directed by me. If you are finished with relevant work and others are not, the expectation is that you will engage in your own personal work for other classes.
Leaving the Classroom	1. You must always get permission from the teacher before leaving the classroom and those requests must be minimal. Permission will be granted for specific purposes. For instance, if you request to go to the bathroom, the permission is only for you to go to the bathroom on our floor. It is not a license to roam the halls.
Cheating	1. Students cheating will receive a 0 on the assignment(s) with no option to redo. A referral will be submitted to administration and a parent email sent.
Missed Work	1. Each student is responsible for getting missed assignments when absent. 2. Missed assignments must be made up within 2 school days. 3. Missed Test/Quiz must be made up within 2 school days. 4. Daily assignments are posted on the class Canvas page.
Grading	Assignments/Labs - 50% of grade Tests/Quizzes - 50% of grade
End of Class	1. Students should start preparing to leave class a few minutes prior to the end of class. 2. During departure prep, it is expected that students remain orderly and quiet to make the transition to the next class smooth and so that I can relay any pertinent information during that time without interruption.
Fire Drills, Tornado Drills, Lockdowns	1. Follow the teacher’s instructions and take all safety drills seriously. 2. Fire drill - exit to the back and side of school and go to other side of teacher parking lot and remain with your class. 3. Tornado drill – go downstairs and kneel down facing the wall in the hallway. 4. Lockdown – sit in the front of the classroom and remain completely silent.
CANVAS Classroom Online-Learning Platform & Resources	1. All assignments, whether answer sheets or Packet Tracer files, will be uploaded to the assignment from which they were downloaded. That is the expected submission for all assignments. 2. Each module will have a single due date that is 5 - 8 days from start date. Some modules are smaller than others. Quizzes and tests are part of the module and each assignment flows from one to the next in numbered sequence. They should be processed in order. 3. Canvas logs every student submission with a date and time. 4. Grades in canvas reflect only the specific assignment grade and are NOT the teacher’s gradebook. PowerSchool grading is 50% tests/quizzes and 50% assignments/labs.
Proof of Learning	The POL for this course is the CompTIA A+ 220-1101 certification exam. This exam is administered at a Pearson Vue testing center. The selection of the site has not been made yet. More information will be released about the field trip to the site for the cert. More to come.

Canvas

All quizzes and tests will be performed on our "learning platform," Canvas. Assignments will be submitted by uploading files to the assignment being completed. Students not having used Canvas before should alert the teacher and they will be shown how to submit assignments on Canvas.

Individual assignments will indicate which method of submission on Canvas is expected. If students need a refresher or have questions, they can access the Canvas Student Guide for specific instructions. It is the student's responsibility to ensure correct and complete assignments are submitted on time and to contact the instructor if there is a problem. The Canvas Learning Platform logs every student log-in on Canvas which provides teachers with a list of when students log-in to Canvas using their user id.

Canvas is used to grade assignments as well, however, the grades in Canvas, while germaine to that assignment, are NOT the teacher’s gradebook. The teacher’s gradebook includes categories of assignments that may be weighted differently and may include grades for assignments that did not use the Canvas Learning Platform. Therefore, students and parents should always check their child’s true average on the Parent Portal in Powerschool.

Curriculum Mistakes

The curriculum for this semester is newly created and is based on the Stanly Community College CCNA 1 coursework. This work was manually created and could have a mistake or two. Should you come across a mistake or something that is incorrectly applied in a quiz or test, please approach me directly and let me know there is a mistake. Questions that are incorrect and directly impact the students will be credited to all students and the item will be corrected for future classes.
