This course is designed to help students understand the basic principles of the accounting cycle. Emphasis is placed on the analysis and recording of business transactions; preparation and interpretation of financial statements; accounting systems; banking and payroll activities; basic types of business ownership; and an accounting career orientation. The rigor in this course in on the HONORS level. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include cooperative education, entrepreneurship, internship, mentorship, school-based enterprise, service learning, and job shadowing. FBLA competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

Students must have for each class:

  • At least a 1 to 1 ½ inch binder (Not a spiral bound notebook) for notes and other handouts.
  • A simple financial calculator (the scientific ones are okay as well).
  • Pencils/Erasers preferred or erasable pens
  • Expo Marker
  • Colored Pencils
  • A charged Chromebook
  • Highlighters helpful - not required

HOMEWORK POLICY:

I believe that the majority of work should be done in the classroom setting.  My personal philosophy is that homework should be a limited practice of skills learned during the block.  That being said, this is an honors class and there will be some homework assigned over the term.

LATE WORK:

Students are expected to turn in work on time.  In case of an absence, students have two school days to make up any assignment.  If a test or quiz was previously scheduled, then a student should be prepared to take that test or quiz when they return.  I am willing to work with students who have legitimate issues with getting work in on time.  The student should come by or email me to discuss any problem that they have in a timely manner!!  Students will earn a 5% reduction for each day an assignment is late.  No assignments will be accepted after the end of the unit/chapter.  The goal is to learn, not adversely penalize the student so please do not wait.  In the business world, communication is a crucial part of being successful.  Students should assimilate this maxim now rather than when they leave high school.

The daily purpose statement, assignments and upcoming quizzes/tests are available on Canvas.

GRADING POLICY:

              Tests & Projects:               30%

              Quizzes & Projects :         20%

              Individual Assignments:     30%

              Collaboration Work:            15%

              Warm Up/Exit Tickets:        5%

This grading scale applies to each term (grading period) within the semester.  There are three terms that each count for 25%.  This means that grading periods 1-3 count for a total of 75% of the final grade.  The final 25% comes from the final exam.  It is important to remember that the final exam counts for one fourth of the total course!

EXTRA HELP:

For regular help, I am available most days before and after school. Please check with me in advance. Work can also be made up during the Cavalier period.

CELL PHONE, SMART WATCHES, OTHER TECHNOLOGIES POLICY:

With the increased use of cellphones (etc.) in school, it is important for students to understand school and class policies on cellphones.  First, the CHS Cell Phone policy is listed in the school handbook. Cell Phones MAY NOT be used during class.  They must be stored out of sight.  Texting, etc. in class is NOT allowed at any time.  Violation of this policy will be determined by Front Office based on number of total offenses.

THE CLASSROOM

In order to make sure there are no rodents and pests appearing in the classroom, No Food or drink is allowed. Only water bottles are acceptable stored on the floor.

ACADEMIC HONESTY:

Cuthbertson High School follows the Cavalier Honor Code.  Please refer to the Handbook in the student agenda for the policy and consequences for violation of the code regarding cheating and plagiarism.

MY GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • 100% Effort: I believe that hard work should be done in the classroom.  I do not give much homework but if you do not work in the class then you should expect to take it home with you!
  • 100% Commitment: You should be committed to attending class and being punctual because if you are not here then you cannot learn.  I try my best to be here and be on time.  You should too!
  • 100% Academic Honesty: Cuthbertson High School’s faculty has pledged to uphold the Cavalier Honor Code.  It is expected that students will do the same by neither cheating nor plagiarizing.
  • 100% Respect: I count on students to respect people (classmates & teacher); property (all technology & equipment) and ideas (opinions).
