Fall 2021 Digital Design and Animation 1

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course focuses on the principles, concepts, and use of complex graphic tools used to create digital art, special effects, and animation.  Students will learn how to edit photos, create vector images, edit videos, and create 3d models.

Honors:

Honors - Digital Design and Animation is an honors level course. Students earning credit for an Honors level course receive an elevated number of Quality Points for their Grade Point Average. Students should be aware that this Honors level course will include:

  • Required extension opportunities that are directly related to the Standard Course of Study. This includes additional content beyond that covered in the College Preparatory level.
  • More challenging coursework and assessments. Students will be expected to demonstrate higher levels of understanding for grades.
  • Projects and presentations will be more in depth.
  • Students will have to focus and study regularly to master the content.
  • The expectation that students can move through the coursework at an accelerated pace and students experiencing difficulty should quickly seek guidance from their teacher on how they can be more successful.

Most assignments will be completed in class.  Only completed assignments turned in on time can receive full credit.  Come to class prepared!  This is part of your grade.  The grading scale is calculated on a weighted scale as follows:

EmpowerED - this provides parents with links to online resources and apps that students can access.

They will be using 3ds max to learn how to create 3D models.  It can be downloaded for free with a student email address from the Autodesk (Links to an external site.) website.

TARDY POLICY: 

At CATA, instruction is very important. All students are expected to be in their classrooms and ready to receive instruction before the tardy bell rings for each class. Following the tardy bell, students who are not in class must report to the front office for a tardy pass if they tardy to first period.  During the rest of the day teachers will mark student tardy in the PowerSchool Attendance System.   Only students with a Tardy Pass will be admitted after the tardy bell rings for first period.  There is absolutely no food allowed in the classrooms.  Students may not bring in food. 

 

Tardies will be recorded as unexcused unless an excuse can be verified by staff. Tardies will result in the following penalties:

 

All students must report to the office when tardy to first period and to class the rest of the day.  Teachers will mark students tardy who are late to 2nd period, 3rd period, and 4th period.  If a student is tardy twice in third period on Cougar Time days (Once before class and once after lunch), then the teacher will  mark them tardy one time in Power School and write it up as a minor incident in Educator Handbook for the second tardy of the period.   

 

1st/2nd Tardy:  Warning from an administrator in the front office (1st period) and the teacher in the classroom (all periods)

3rd Tardy:  Warning from an administrator in the front office (1st period) and the teacher in the classroom (all periods).  The teacher will contact the parent on the third tardy by phone.  

4th/5th Tardy:  Warning from an administrator in the front office (1st period) and the teacher in the classroom (all periods). The teacher will submit a discipline referral to the administration and 1 day ASD with administration.  The administration will contact the parent.  

6th/7th Tardy:  Warning from an administrator in the front office (1st period) and the teacher in the classroom (all periods).  The teacher will submit a discipline referral to the administration and 2 days ASD with administration.  The administration will contact the parent.  

8th Tardy: Warning from an administrator in the front office (1st period) and the teacher in the classroom (all periods).  The teacher will submit a discipline referral to the administration and 3 days ASD.  The administration will set up a parent conference, create a written plan, and possible additional consequences. 

 

  • Please note that administrator warnings will only come from an administrator in the office for first period tardies.  Please be sure to give warnings to students in all other periods. 

 

The administration reserves the right to modify consequences on a case-by-case basis whenever appropriate. This may include loss of parking privileges. Students arriving on late buses will not be considered tardy.

 

 

Late Work:

Any late work that cannot be made up at all is recorded as a 0

If a student has the opportunity to make up work then, the grade is recorded as a 

 

Exam Exemption Policy

For any class that does NOT have an EOC, NC Final, or CTE Exam.  ONLY FOR TEACHER MADE EXAMS, please place in your syllabus

High School students will not be required to take a teacher-made[6] final exam in a course in the following situations:

  • The student has an average of 90 or above the week prior to the administration of the exam and has no more than 3 absences (excused or unexcused) in the class; or
  • The student has an average of 80 or above the week prior to the administration of the exam and has no more than 2 absences  (excused or unexcused) in the class

CLASS ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular attendance is required.  Your presence in class is crucial since most of the activities in this course occur during class time.  Your active participation will enhance your success as well as that of your classmates.  Be active in class!  Participate in class discussions!  Your opinions, input, and questions are what this class is all about!  Class attendance is part of your final grade.

Credit will not be granted for classes when absences for a student reach eight days for a semester long course and fifteen days for a yearlong course. Absences include those that are lawful, unlawful, and due to suspension.

Following any absence(s), a student is required to present a written document from the parent or guardian stating the reason for the absence.

 

STUDENT USE OF COMPUTER EQUIPMENT/INTERNET

Please READ pages 53 – 54 in your UCPS handbook and pages 14 -16 of your CATA student handbook regarding appropriate use of computer equipment/internet and consequences for misuse of both.

 

TUTORING

Students are required to attend mandatory tutoring for each class if grade drops below  “70”.  Tutoring is scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday 8:15 am – 8:50 pm.  Alternate and/or additional dates and times may be scheduled with teacher.

 

LATE/MAKE-UP WORK

Assignments are due on the announced due date. It is your responsibility to keep up with class activities and assignments and request missing assignments due to absence.  Upon returning from an excused absence, students will be given two days for each day absence to make up missed assignments/test.  When arrangements are not made to complete make-up work or if work is not submitted on time, the student will receive a grade of 0%

 New Schoolwide policy:  Work that has recieved a 0 and cannot be made up will have a 0 in the gradebook.  If it has not been turned in but still may be completed for a grade, it will have a score of 1.

Please note:  Bottled water or any drink inside a resealable container is allowed.  The privilege will be removed if containers are not disposed of properly.  Water is not allowed near the computers.

  • Be prepared daily with all required materials
  • Be punctual – be seated quietly and ready to begin when the bell rings
  • Conduct themselves in a manner which respects all students’ right to learn
  • Follow all verbal and written instructions from the teacher
  • Use time between class to take care of restroom needs

(If there is a medical reason, a doctor’s note is required)

  • Begin working on your pre-class assignment at the beginning – you may use your textbook, notes and homework, however this is an individual task
  • Stay seated until the teacher dismisses class
  • Contact teacher with any questions concerning a grade

(Progress reports are issued in the middle of each 6 weeks period.   You may schedule an appointment for tutoring, if needed)
