This week's theme is all about "The Danger of Silence." Yesterday, we watched Clint Smith's TEd Talk and listened as he talked about the various ways we fail to speak up for ourselves and others.
He begins his speech with: "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in a 1968 speech where he reflects upon the Civil Rights Movement, states, 'In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends.'"
He continues: "As a teacher, I've internalized this message. Every day, all around us, we see the consequences of silence manifest themselves in the form of discrimination, violence, genocide and war."
Today, we are going to continue this theme of silence and read a few excerpts from The House on Mango Street Click here to find the reading.
