Welcome to AIG/Advanced 6th Grade English Language Arts

Hours:  2nd block, 10:40-12:00--prep;  I will respond to emails and phone calls until 5 p.m.  After 5 p.m., I will respond the following day.  After 5 p.m. on Fridays, I will respond after 5 p.m. on Sunday.

First Two Weeks of School

Developing Habits & Routines (2 Weeks)

As we begin a new school year, the first two weeks will be dedicated to building routines and setting a solid foundation for the rest of the school year. Students will gain a clear understanding of expectations, both at school and home. Students will think about their reading life and set goals for their academic success. Students will be trained in navigating Canvas and accessing their reading assignments on a daily basis. We will work on health and safety and build relationships with students, both face-to-face and virtually.

Year Long Question---How and why do people change?

Overview--

Students will have an anchor novel for each with various other texts tied to and related to the novel.  These other texts include informational, poems, graphics, etc.  Students are also responsible for learning vocabulary through Word Within a Word--Latin and Greek Roots.  At the end of each unit, a project will be completed synthesizing texts and answering the year long question.

Unit 1 --Narrative Unit and Asian-American Literature, August-October

Students will be begin with the review elements of literature and transition to reading (listening) to the novel, Farewell to Manazar.  Various other texts include Japanese-American internment camps, WWII Asian-American accounts, research about WWII, poems, speeches and written responses.  Word within a Word, lists 1-5 will be covered.

Instructional Model

Plan B - Students will attend one day each week for face-to-face instruction. Students will participate in remote learning on the other four days of the week. 

Plan D - Students will be completely virtual at home. 

Student Schedule

  • Monday: students with last names beginning A-D will attend on this day
  • Tuesday: students with last names beginning E-K will attend on this day
  • Wednesday: students with last names beginning L-Q will attend on this day
  • Thursday: students with last names beginning R-Z will attend on this day
  • Friday: no students will attend this day but will continue remote learning at home
  • Siblings with different last names will be scheduled to attend on the same day. 

Proposed Student Schedule (6th Grade)

Please encourage your student to follow this schedule at home to be consistent in completing work on a daily basis including remote Fridays.
