Spanish 1

Parkwood High School— 2020-2021

 

 Spanish 1 is an introduction to the study of a second language through the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Culture, geography, and grammar are parts of this course. Students have limited or no knowledge of the language at the beginning of the course.

 

Essential Standards Addressed:

  1. Use the language to engage in interpersonal communication. (Speak to a partner)
  2. Understand words and concepts presented in the language. (Understand when spoken to)
  3. Use the language to present information to an audience. (Speak to the class)
  4. Compare the students’ culture and the target culture. (Discuss your culture vs. others)

 

 

Our curriculum is divided in themes

Beginning Chapter: Basic Vocabulary

Chapter 1: I am/I am not (basic adjectives)/I like and I do not like (basic verbs)

Chapter 2: School/Classroom Information/School Schedule

Chapter 3: Food

Chapter 4: Community and Sports

 

Expectations: 

At all levels, students will actively engage in listening, reading, writing, and speaking Spanish. Students are also to be positive and respectful of the learning atmosphere in our classroom. Learning a language takes courage and a lot of practice. It takes time and patience. One must study, memorize, complete homework and dedicate at least 20 minutes each night to the weekly vocabulary. You will be able to read and write sentences by the end of the course. You will be able to talk about many things about yourself. You will present this information to the class.

Treat others as you want to be treated.

Be prepared for class.

Be respectful to the teacher and your classmates.

Be responsible for your learning.

Follow directions.

Do not use your cellphone in class unless I have given you permission.

Use the chrome book when permission is given.

Follow the school rules as well as the Student Conduct Code at Parkwood.

 

Failure to follow the expectations above may result in the following consequences:

Hall Pass Policy:

 Use this privilege wisely. Do not take advantage of this. If I feel you are misusing your privilege it will be taken away. I do not give you a set number of Hall Passes. I trust that you will respect me as I will respect you. Please sign out and in based on the time and date when using the bathroom.

 

Grading Procedures:     I grade by points

Late Work Policy:

Assigned work will be quality work and handed in on time.  If an assignment is missed make sure you check CANVAS for the assignment. All work for the week is due the week it is assigned.  If you need extra time to complete an assignment, please let me know. As a general rule, I do not accept late work or allow you to make up an assignment unless there are circumstances that are beyond your control. Please always speak with me about an assignment that you may need extra time completing.

 

Food and Drink Policy:

Food and drink are allowed in my room. You may have water with you during class time. Gum: “chew responsibly”. Please clean up after yourself and do not leave trash for anyone else to pick up. If this becomes a problem then the food and drink privileges will be taken away.

 

Arrival and Dismissal:

When the bell rings, be ready to start. You will have a short break at the beginning of class for a break as I do the attendance. All cell phones are allowed at this time and at the end of class. When break time is over, I do ask that you put your cell phone in the phone chart. Please put it on silent and not vibrate. At the end of class (normally 5-10 minutes you will have a break and you may use phones at that time as well. The cell phone chart is not optional it is a requirement.  Do not stand at the door and wait for the bell. You will stay seated until the bell.

 

Tutoring:

Tutoring will take place at scheduled times set up by the student and the teacher.  Students with a C or less should attend tutoring at least once a week.

 

Cheating Policy:

Cheating will not be tolerated. If you are caught or suspected of cheating you will receive a zero on that assignment. Parent contact could be made in these instances.

 

Final Exam Exemptions:  If you have an A average and 2 unexcused absences you do NOT have to take my exam. If you have a B average and 1 unexcused absence you do NOT have to take my exam. The county made the exam. It is a 3 hour exam and is NOT on the computer. There are listening, reading, writing, grammar, and speaking parts. It is a huge privilege to exempt this exam. We will discuss exemptions later on in the semester.  Note: at this time we do not have any information on final exams.
