COURSE NAMES: Aerospace Science: (AS 100) – Milestones in Aviation History and Leadership Education (LE 400):  Fundamentals of Management 

 

1. Course Description:

 This course is 40% Aerospace Science, 40% Leadership Education, and 20% Wellness.  Integrated throughout this course are 21st century skills, which include learning and innovation skills, critical thinking, problem solving, and communication.  

CREDIT HOURS: One Elective Credit for the semester 

          a. Aerospace Science portion is an aviation history course focusing on the development of flight throughout the centuries. The emphasis is on civilian and military contributions to aviation; the development, modernization, and transformation of the Air Force.  The second part of this course is an Introduction to Global Awareness, knowing how historical, geographic, religious, and ethnic factors have shaped the European region of the world.  We also cover how economic, political, and social factors influences cultures.  

            b. Leadership Education - introduces the student to the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) program, while instilling elements of good citizenship, strengthens and develops character; develops study habits and time management; wear of the Air Force uniform; and Air Force customs, courtesies and drill skills are introduced.  Additionally, cadets will be taught the fundamentals of Drill and Ceremonies. This portion of the course concentrates on the elements of military drill, and describes individual and group precision movements, procedures for saluting, drill, ceremonies, reviews, parades, and development of the command voice. Students are provided detailed instruction on ceremonial performances and protocol for civilian and military events and have the opportunity to personally learn drill. 

            c. Wellness part of the course includes weekly accomplishment of physical fitness exercises and discussion of pertinent aspects of a good, life-long fitness program. Due to the COVID-19 schedule, cadets are required to complete the  Physical Fitness portion at home.

2. Course Objectives:

UNIFORM WILL NOT BE WORN THE FIRST SEMESTER. 
 

AS 100 Milestones in Aviation History

  •  Describe historical facts and impacts of the early attempts of heavier-than-air flight. 
  •  Analyze the impact World War I aviation had on commercial aviation. 
  •  Examine the role aerial bombing had on the outcome of World War II. 
  • Investigate the impact commercial jet aviation has had on US travel. 
  • Analyze the lessons learned from global use of US air-power. 
  • Evaluate developing technology that will affect the US Air Force of the future.

LE 400 Fundamentals of Management

  • Analyze management and its application to JROTC.
  • Analyze the elements of project management.
  • Evaluate the importance of formal planning within an organization.
  • Analyze decision making within an organization.
  • Evaluate time management and change management within an organization.
  • Analyze concerns managers must consider in managing individuals and groups.
  • Analyze the factors that make work teams productive.
  • Evaluate the interpersonal skills of delegating, negotiating, and mentoring..

4. The student must provide: 

·         Chromebook, pencils and pens, paper, and notebook 

5. Grading Policy: General: Cadet grading is broken down into three parts:

            a. Academic Performance: This grade is a measurement of cadet performance in assigned course work. It makes up 40% of the total grade and is a direct result of test (25%) and daily classroom participation/quizzes (15%).  

            b. LEADERSHIP PERFORMANCE:  This portion covers three distinct areas encompassing 35% of the total grade:

   1.  Wearing the uniform properly and as scheduled (NOT GRADED DURING COVID-19).

   2.  Attitude, military bearing, leadership capability, classroom participation

   3.  Performance of the basic military drills procedures.

            c. WELLNESS: This area is based on participation in physical fitness at home.  Student will be required to log their activities (LOGS WILL BE TURNED IN FOR A GRADE)

6.  MAKE UP WORK:  For each class absence, a student is allowed one class to complete missed assignments for full credit.  

7.   LATE WORK:  Late assignments will be accepted up to two days late, for partial grade.
