Course Description:
The IB Diploma Programme higher level History of the Americas course aims to promote an understanding of history as a discipline, including the nature and diversity of sources, methods and interpretations. Students are encouraged to comprehend the present by reflecting critically on the past. They are further expected to understand historical developments at national, regional, and international levels and learn about their own historical identity through the study of the historical experiences of different cultures. In addition, the course is designed to:

*encourage the systematic and critical study of human experience and behavior; physical, economic and social environments; and the history and development of social and cultural institutions
*develop the capacity to identify, analyze critically and evaluate theories, concepts and arguments about the nature and activities of the individual and society
*enable students to collect, describe and analyze data used in studies of society; test hypotheses; and interpret complex data and source material
*promote an appreciation of the way learning is relevant to both the culture in which the student lives and the culture of other societies
*develop an awareness that human attitudes and beliefs are widely diverse and that the study of society requires an appreciation of such diversity
*enable the student to recognize that the content and methodologies of the subjects in group 3 are contestable and that their study requires the toleration of uncertainty.

IB History is a two-year course taught at Higher Level. The first year concentrates on the history of the Americas with some emphasis on American relations with Europe and Latin America. The course will incorporate the Common Core Standards of American History in addition to IB requirements. The second year of the course explores themes in World History through an in-depth study of an individual prescribed subject and the selection of two topics in the world history. In addition to three external exams taken in May of the students' Senior year, students will be internally assessed through demonstrating evidence of research skills, organization, and referencing through an individual historical investigation.

Graded Work and Late Policy:
A student’s grade is comprised of an accumulation of points. Each assignment will be worth a designated amount of points. A student’s six six-week grades and final grade are determined based off the total amount of points earned divided by total amount of points possible, which results in an alpha-numeric score. The individual assignment/assessment grades are not weighted by percentile; however, any state, district, or school mandated tests that are required may be a weighted percentile of the student’s total grade with the remainder of the student’s grade comprised of the points earned throughout the semester, if applicable. *See the Syllabus for additional details*

Late assignments are accepted, but will have penalties. Assignments will only earn a maximum of half credit after the due date and time and will only be accepted if submitted within three consecutive days (including weekend days) from the original due date of the assignment. *See the Syllabus for additional details*
