March 27, 2020
Dear UCPS Families of Students with Disabilities:
I know that many of you have questions about COVID-19 and how it relates to UCPS educating students with disabilities. You and your children may also be experiencing added stress and anxiety. Please know that we are with you and here to support you during this very difficult time. Please utilize NC 2-1-1 if you need any support or additional information about COVID-19. You will continue to receive district-wide communication from UCPS; however, I wanted to share a few notes specifically about students with disabilities.

As of March 18, 2020, UCPS has been providing, and will continue to provide, optional review learning opportunities for ALL students in UCPS, including students with disabilities. Your student will continue to access the General Education and Special Education opportunities through their teacher. This is not new content or material. This model will continue for elementary students. Digital resources will continue to be available through the EmpowerED Family Portal for all grade levels.

Beginning the week of March 30, 2020, UCPS will shift to a remote learning platform for high school and middle school students. Optional review learning opportunities will continue to be made available for all students on this remote learning platform, including students with disabilities, for all who can access these opportunities. Your child’s teacher will utilize Canvas as the platform to deliver supplemental or review materials. The use of additional remote learning platforms will be considered on a case-by-case basis, with consideration for individual needs and appropriateness, for the delivery of supplemental/review materials for special education and related services. Elementary students have been provided access to three weeks’ worth of print materials and may contact their school’s principal if additional resources are needed.

As you know, this is an unprecedented time and the information and guidance that we are sent from federal and state authorities remains fluid. As we receive additional information and guidance, we will be in touch to update you.

Dr. Paige Moore
