I am looking forward to a great semester, and I hope all of you are as well.  Here are some things you will need to know as we get started.

What will I be learning in Honors Math 3?

This course has a total of eight units which are listed below and approximately how much time we will spend in class to complete each unit.

  1. Functions & Their Inverses – 10 days
  2. Exponential & Logarithmic Functions – 9 or 10 days
  3. Polynomial Functions – 9 Days
  4. Rational Functions – 10 Days
  5. Modeling with Geometry – 8 Days
  6. Reasoning with Geometry  - Triangle Centers and Quadrilaterals – 7 Days
  7. Reasoning with Geometry - Circles – 9 Days
  8. Trigonometric Functions – 10 Days
  9. Statistics – 5 Days

What does it look like to be a good math student?

The following are the standards of mathematical practice.  They describe the attributes of a good math student. Notice none of these are about finding the correct answer fastest, getting the answer right every time or even using a particular solution method.

  1. Understand and Persevere
  2. Logic and Reasoning
  3. Justify and Critique
  4. Model with Mathematics
  • Strategically use Tools
  • Attend to Precisions
  • Utilize Structure
  • Utilize Pattern

What supplies do I need for Honors Math 3?

  • Binder (Any Size)
  • Pencils
  • Lined Paper
  • Graph Paper
  • TI-84 (any version) Graphing Calculator
  • Dry Erase Markers

I have a limited number of calculators in the classroom that students can borrow during class time and Warrior Block.  These calculators are not allowed to leave my classroom. If you need a calculator at home here are some options:

  1. Borrow a graphing calculator from a family member or friend.
  2. Use your phone calculator - this is an option for outside of class not during class. (If you unlock the screen rotation on your phone and rotate the phone calculator sideways you have access to many different calculator functions.)
  3. Use an online calculator: Desmos.com (There is also a free Desmos phone app)
  4. Buy a graphing calculator.  They are a little more than $100, but it might be a worthwhile investment if you plan to take higher level math courses.
  5. Rent a calculator from the Media Center for the semester.

How will I earn my grade?

Grades will be measured on a weighted system.

Homework: __%

Homework is to be turned in on time. Completion will be checked for on a regular basis. Failure to do so will result in a loss of homework points.

Quizzes: __%

Quizzes may be presented at any time without warning.

Tests: __%

If you are absent on a review day you will still be expected to take the test on the scheduled day. You will be able to access the review sheet and answers on my webpage, so there is no excuse to be unable to test.

Don’t forget that you can check you grade on PowerSchool throughout the semester.

Can I turn in work Late?

Late work will not be accepted after the unit is complete. Missing work will result in receiving zero points for that assignment. If you are missing work be sure to submit it before the unit ends. Late work will receive a maximum of 4 out of 5 points.

How can I get tutoring?

  • Come to Warrior Block on your assigned day.
  • Meet with Mr. Slaughter before school from 7:30 to 8:00 or after school by appointment.
  • If you are looking for a peer tutor or another teacher tutor, talk with me and I will give you contact information.

What will be expected of me when I am in class?

  1. Be on time to class
  2. Be Self-Motivated
  3. Be Attentive
  4. Be Responsible

What class procedures should I be aware of?

  1. Cell phones –Cell phones are not to be used during class unless otherwise directed by the teacher. Cell phones need to be put away and out of sight. If your cell phone is out during the instructional period, the student will have to put the cell phone in the caddy. If a cell phone is sighted during a quiz or test you will receive a zero on that assignment.
  2. Turn in bin – On table near the back of class
  3. Pencil Sharpener - Located in the back of class. Sharpener is to be used before class and during independent work time.  Do not use during lesson because it is loud.
  4. Bathroom Policy - One student may leave class at a time to use the bathroom.  Students may not leave during lectures to go to the bathroom and may not leave to go to the bathroom during the first 5 minutes of class.
