Welcome to Photography I/II!

Please read the following information, sign and return by Friday 1/24/2020.

(This is your first assignment so don’t lose points.)  J

Course Overview: This course is an exploration of digital

photography, image-editing and art-making using

digital images.  During this semester, students will gain an

understanding of digital photography techniques and

photo-editing processes.  Students will continue to explore

and apply the basics of the elements of art and the principles

of design to create interesting and strong compositions. They

will learn to communicate their ideas through photographic

media and artistic processes with sufficient skills and sensitivity.

Students will also study the artistic production of photographers

through history in order to develop objectivity about their

own images.

Materials: You will need a camera and chrome book for class everyday.

  • Digital camera

Photo II students should have their own digital camera, they should not be using Smart phones at all. (Cameras should have the ability to adjust ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, preferably Cannon or Nikon).  In term 5 & 6 smart phones can be used.

There is a limited number of school cameras and assignment deadlines will not change based on a student not getting their turn to use one.  Students who will be taking turns and using the digital camera will have to check it out on a daily basis.  Any damage incurred during the time the student has checked out the school camera will be the students responsibility to repair or replace.  Also, when using the school’s camera, students must provide their own SD card

If purchasing a camera is not currently an option, students should be prepared to put in the extra time and effort needed to borrow the classroom camera.  A student who is unable to attain an SD card and/or their own digital camera should wait and take photography at a later date.

  • On occasion: funds for color printing (.10 - .25 cents per page in Media Center.  Competition entries require students who are entered to have their pictures professionally printed.  CVS, Walmart, Costco… are just a few places a student can go to have competition pictures printed)
  • Glue sticks are very helpful
  • 1”-2” binder
  • Clear plastic sleeves
  • Dividers & Tabs
  • USB cable or SD Card in camera that works in computer or a card holder. Ex:

Absences:  All work assigned has been given sufficient class time to complete.  Students are encouraged to spend time outside of class photographing assignments, however, if class time is spent wisely, students should have very little work outside of class.  If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to catch up on assignments.

Daily Expectations: This is an elective course and not required for graduation.  Mature behavior is a requirement.  During class, students will be allowed to go in assigned groups to designated areas unsupervised using the honor system.  If a student is seen horsing around or in a non-designated area they will be immediately grounded to the room for a period of time or the remainder of the semester depending on the behavior.  Photography students must be responsible to work independently, and get assignment done in a timely manner.  Demonstrating respect and trustworthiness is an expectation of all Weddington students, especially those in photography class. The art/photo room creates an environment for creative learning.  Staying focused produces quality work.

My availability:

I would like to think I am always available to my students during the school day, however not when I’m in a class that is not your own.  I do have 2nd block planning, and 4th lunch.  I am also available in the mornings from 7:30-8a.m.  I can come in a little earlier than 7:30a.m. or after school if need be when an appointment is set up in advance.

Grading:  Grades will be based on a rubric that addresses five criteria:  Accomplishing the Concept/objectives of the project; Creativity; Challenge, Composition and Design; and Craftsmanship.  Work submitted after deadlines will loose 10 points per day.  The exception to this is if the student has an excused   absence.  Assignments can be re-submitted as many times as necessary to achieve the desired grade a student wants.  However, all assignments must be complete and finalized before each of the term grades are due.  Assignments will not roll over between terms.

Deductions from grade:

-10: Per day you are late.

-25:  Photo needs to be re-taken because it does not meet guidelines of assignment.

-15:  Photo is not “frame-able & hang-able” (Composition)

-10:  Each additional Major correction.  (Takes more than 10 minutes to make a correction)

-5: Each additional Minor correction.  (Can be easily changed)

I have read and reviewed the information provided in this syllabus in class, as well as with my parents.  I understand what is expected of me and agree to follow the school rules and the Art/Photo Classroom rules.  I also agree to accept any consequences that come with failure to follow the expectations, including coming in at lunch or after school to makeup work.

I understand that behavior related issues occasionally occur and consequences are in place such as referrals, parent teacher conferences or ISS. However, because Photography is an elective I will not conduct myself in any manner that would result in any of the above mentioned consequences.
