Course Description: The course will introduce math topics studied at the college level.  The rapid growth of discrete topics has made the development of the course a more difficult task.  Discrete Math focuses on addressing business applications, computer science applications, the introduction of social choice and matrices, statistics, utilizing algorithms, and apportionment.

Discrete Mathematics:  The study of discrete mathematics will include topics such as number systems, sets, counting, Boolean Algebra, trees and sorting, graphs, functions, recursive functions, logic gates, relations, election theory, matrices and population growth, and apportionment which includes government applications.

Statistics:  The introduction of statistics will include topics such as sampling, distributions, plotting data, central tendency, dispersion, Central Limit Theorem, and regressions.

Classroom Guidelines:

Homework: I believe homework is very important because it helps reinforce what has been learned in class, serves as preparation for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, and helps develop positive study habits.  Therefore, I will assign homework daily, and I expect you to do your best on each assignment.  The homework assigned will also prove to be valuable for success on quizzes and tests.

Absences:   If at any time you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain and complete the assignments in the allotted time (school policy allows 2 days for each day of absence).  This applies to all work.  It is your responsibility to notify me when you wish to make up your work.  You may make up quizzes and test before or after school or during class if we are not covering a new lesson.

Progress Reports:  You will receive a progress report in the middle of each grading period to inform you and your parents on your progress in math.  You will also be able to check your grades through PowerSchool online.

Exams:  At the end of the semester, you will take the Discrete Mathematics NC Final exam.  This test will count as 25% of your final grade.  There are NO Exam Exemptions.

Calculator Usage:  The calculator used in this class is a TI-83 or TI-83Plus.  You are allowed to check a calculator out for overnight use after fourth period.  However, it must be returned before school the following day.
