8th Grade Exploring Business, Marketing and Entrepreneurship Syllabus

General Information.  We will cover the following topics:

  • Purposes of Businesses:  meeting consumer needs and wants
  • Types of Businesses:  Sole Proprietorship (owned by one individual), Partnership (owned by two or more individuals), Franchise (like Chick-fil-a), Corporation (which are the only businesses that can issue stock, such as Nike and Wal-Mart)or Non-Profit Organization (which earn money to help those in need of food, shelter, clothing, or medical assistance, such as The Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, United Way etc.).
  •  Classifying Businesses:  Profit making or Non-Profit.  Determine whether they provide Goods (Products), Services or both.
  • Functions (Departments) of a Business:  Management, Accounting, Human Resources, Marketing, Information Technology and Operations
  • Entrepreneurship:  is the process of starting and running a business
  • The Entrepreneurial Process:  Discovery, Concept Development, Resourcing, Actualization, and Harvesting (is your business profitable or do you have to close it).
  • Personal Characteristics of Successful Entrepreneurs:  Creative, Responsible Inquisitive, Goal-Oriented, Independent, Self-Confident and Risk-Takers (look for a challenging opportunities)
  • Skills Needed by Successful Entrepreneurs:  Communication, Human relations, Problem solving, Decision making, Technical and Business Skills
  • How to Develop a Business Plan:  obtain financing, analyze critical data
  •  Components (Parts) of a Business Plan:  Executive Summary, Product/Service, Management, Industry/Market Analysis, Organization, Marketing, Financial and Growth Plan are all parts of the plan
  • Financing the Business:  personal, family, friends, investors, banks etc.
  •  Satisfy Legal Requirements:  get permits or licenses if required; Location (rent or own space); Zoning laws, building codes; and taxes are all things to be considered
  • Protect Your Business:  Trademarks protect your Logo; Patents protect your inventions; Copyrights protect your creative work (written, artistic, musical or dramatic)

Learning Requirements:  It is imperative for each student to Listen and Participate. 

 

Supplies:  One Spiral Notebook and a pencil.  Bring your determination to do your best!

 

Tutoring Days and Hours:  Available by appointment.

Grading Policy:  My on my Canvas Quizzes all of my students have 3 attempts for each one.  My goal is for students to learn, not to memorize information for the day.

Late Work Policy:  I will accept their work late if they will complete it as soon as possible.
