Advanced Functions and Modeling

Course Description: AFM provides students with an in-depth study of modeling and applying functions in a real world context. The course expands the study of the functions studied in Math 3 and also covers introductory topics from Pre-Calculus and Statistics.

Grading Policy:  50% Tests              30% Quizzes              20% Homework/Classwork

All assignments will be graded using the points system.

Materials:

  • You will need a binder, notebook paper, graph paper, pencils, erasers, and tabs to create sections for warm-ups, notes, assignments, quizzes and tests. Bring this to class every day.
  • You need to have a personal TI-84 graphing calculator in class every day.
  • You will need/use your Chromebook daily. Please bring it to class charged every day.
  • You may also want to bring earphones for online video exercises.

Course Expectations: 

  • Be on time and in your seat at the start of class daily. Tardy policy is outlined in the student handbook.
  • Expect homework to be assigned every night and complete it every night. Homework will be checked in a variety of ways and graded based on completion/attempt of all problems.
  • All assignments, notes and help for each unit is posted on the Canvas page for this course. If you are absent, all make up work will be posted on the course Canvas page. 
  • Quizzes/progress checks will be given frequently and may be announced or unannounced.
  • Tutoring will be offered during Smart Lunch A on Tuesday in Room F223/Wednesday Smart Lunch A Upper workroom G. If additional tutoring is needed please let me know and we can make arrangements.

Tests:

There will be one test over each unit, dates of tests will be announced well in advance. You will be required to take a NC EOC final exam in this course. Each of 3 marking periods this semester is 25% of overall course grade, the NC EOC makes up the final 25% of your course grade.

Make-up Work:

It is the student’s responsibility to make-up work when absent. Missed work is due within 2 days of being absent. If you are absent for a quiz or test, it is your responsibility to schedule a time to make it up. SMART lunch will be available to make up tests or quizzes but prior arrangement with the teacher is required. 

I will respond to all email inquiries from parents or students within one school day not including weekend and school holidays. If you are struggling, please reach out and let me help support you as needed.
