 COURSE NAMES: Aerospace Science: (AS 300) ā€“ Exploring Space: The High Frontier and Leadership Education (LE 300):  Life Skill and Career Opportunities

1. Course Description:

 This course is 40% Aerospace Science, 40% Leadership Education, and 20% Wellness.  Integrated throughout this course are 21st century skills, which include learning and innovation skills, critical thinking, problem solving, and communication. 

CREDIT HOURS: One Elective Credit for the semester

     a. Aerospace Science portion is an aviation history course focusing on the development of flight throughout the centuries. The emphasis is on civilian and military contributions to aviation; the development, modernization, and transformation of the Air Force. The second part of this course is an Introduction to Global Awareness, knowing how historical, geographic, religious, and ethnic factors have shaped the European region of the world. We also cover how economic, political, and social factors influences cultures.

     b. Leadership Education - introduces the student to the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) program, while instilling elements of good citizenship, strengthens and develops character; develops study habits and time management; wear of the Air Force uniform; and Air Force customs, courtesies and drill skills are introduced. Additionally, cadets will be taught the fundamentals of Drill and Ceremonies. This portion of the course concentrates on the elements of military drill, and describes individual and group precision movements, procedures for saluting, drill, ceremonies, reviews, parades, and development of the command voice. Students are provided detailed instruction on ceremonial performances and protocol for civilian and military events and have the opportunity to personally learn drill.

     c. Wellness part of the course includes weekly accomplishment of physical fitness exercises and discussion of pertinent aspects of a good, life-long fitness program. Cadets are required to wear their issued Physical Fitness uniforms for complete grade.

  1. Course Objectives:
  • Adhere to proper and weekly uniform wear. (Required for passing the course)
  • Uniform wear is mandatory and must be worn the entire day.
  • Uniform will be worn every Tuesday
  • Adhere to appearance AFJROTC standards. (Required for passing the course)

 AS 300 Exploring Space: The High Frontier

  • Know the history of astronomy and the specific characteristics of the Earth, Moon, solar system, and the planets.
  • Comprehend the big picture of space exploration, including the history of spaceflight, organizations doing work in space, and the overall space environment.
  • Comprehend the key concepts for getting from the surface of the Earth into Earth orbit and to other planets and back again.

  • Analyze the elements of successful financial management skills.
  • Analyze the different ways of pursuing a career path.
  • Analyze the requirements for applying to a college or university.
  • Evaluate the essential process for successfully pursuing desired career or job.
  • Create a plan for successful career development.

  1. The student must provide:
  • Pencils and pens, paper, and notebook
  1. Grading Policy: General: Cadet grading is broken down into three parts:

     a. Academic Performance: This grade is a measurement of cadet performance in assigned course work. It makes up 40% of the total grade and is a direct result of test (25%) and daily classroom participation/quizzes (15%).

     b. LEADERSHIP PERFORMANCE: This portion covers three distinct areas encompassing 35% of the total grade:

  1.  Wearing the uniform properly and as scheduled.
  2. Attitude, military bearing, leadership capability, classroom participation
  3. Performance of the basic military drills procedures.

     c. WELLNESS: This area is based on participation in physical fitness and wear of the PT uniform (MUST WEAR ISSUED PT UNIFORM). It comprises 25 % of the total grade.

6. MAKE UP WORK: For each class absence, a student is allowed one class to complete missed assignments for full credit.  THIS INCLUDES UNIFORM WEAR MAKEUP!

7. LATE WORK: Late assignments will be accepted up to two days late, for partial grade.
