Course Objectives:      

To improve overall muscular strength and endurance.

To improve overall flexibility and quickness.

To improve cardiovascular fitness and endurance.

 

Class Format: The course will consist of weight training, 4 or 5 days per week, with an emphasis on improving muscular strength and endurance.  It will also include cardiovascular exercise and testing.

  • Students will have 10 minutes for attendance, dressing, and clean-up, at the beginning and end of class.
  • Each class will begin with a warm-up activity that will last 10 to 20 minutes. This will be done in the gym, on the field or in the hallway, outside the weight room.
  • After warm-up, weight training will be held in the weight room. There will be a workout plan assigned each day.  Students MUST follow each day’s workout plan .

Friday’s will be lifting, cardio fitness, or classroom work day.  Friday’s will also consist of intramural game activities.

  • After the fitness run, we will have games and tournaments in the gym or in the stadium. These will consist of various different sport activities.
  • The above games will be combined with students from the other PE classes.
  • Students will be required to participate in these games or their participation grade will be affected.

Class Requirements:  

1)  BE ON TIME.  The school tardy policy will be enforced.  Class participation grades can also be affected by tardies.

2)  Students must dress out appropriately for each class.  Proper dress includes knee length shorts, clean t-shirt, proper athletic shoes, jogging tops or bottoms.  NO ONE may participate without proper footwear.  Students will dress for class in the PE locker rooms, in the auxiliary gym. 

  • Failure to dress out for class will result in a 5 point deduction from student’s grade. Student’s must still participate, even without proper clothing (excluding shoes).

3) After roll call, entire class will go to warm-up activity, as a class.  Failure to do this will result in point deductions and possibly a discipline referral.

4) All students must participate in all activities during each class, including the warm-up, weight training, fitness activities, and sport activities.  Failure to do this will result in a deduction of points from the student’s grade.

5) Weight Room Rules: No Profanity

                                                    No Cell Phones or any Electronics

                                                    No food/drink/GUM in Weight room/Gym

                                                    No jewelry worn during class

                                                    No caps in gym or weight room

 

Grading:  ***Your weight training grade is based on participation, effort, conduct and overall improvement in muscular strength/endurance and improvement in overall fitness.  75% of your grade will be related to Participation, Effort, and Conduct.  25% of your grade will be related to overall improvement in muscular strength and improvement in physical fitness. 

Participation/Effort/Conduct (75%)

***Each Student begins each six week grading period with a fresh start.  They can earn up to 10 participation points per day, during each grading period, for a total of 300 points.  Daily points may be deducted for the following reasons:           

  1. Failure to dress out and participate in all activities (-10 pts)
  2. Failure to dress out but still participates (-5 points)
  3. Lack of effort or not following instructions (up to -10 points)
  4. Breaking weight room rules (-2 to -10 each time)
  5. Tardy, causing lack of participation (-1 each time)
  6. Being sent to office for discipline, causing lack of daily participation (-10 points each time)

Strength/Fitness Improvement (25%)

  1. Strength improvement from beginning of semester to end. Measured by Maxout in Bench Press, Squat, Incline Press and Power Clean.
  2. Improvement in 1-Mile run time and push-up / sit-up totals, from beginning of the semester to the end.
  3. Special Projects and Written work will be assigned, covering use of technology and fitness / exercise concepts.

***       Make-up work will be assigned for days absent.  This should be completed within 1 week            of the absence(s).

***       Only notes from a doctor or school athletic trainer will be accepted as an excuse to sit out of class.  PARENT NOTES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.  An email to Mr. Niedermeier or phone message in front office must be received for excuse from participation.
