ART 4 / AP SYLLABUS
Course Description: In Art IV students develop, clarify, and apply their personal philosophy of art and art
making developed in Art III through in-depth, independent, and advanced explorations with media, techniques,
processes, and aesthetics. Exceptional initiative, serious involvement, and commitment are expectations of the
Art IV student. A portfolio evidencing high quality, a broad base of knowledge, and in-depth understanding of
personal art forms is developed and refined. Students take part in planning and installing an exhibition of their
work. Students are expected to complete 15 AP projects before entering the AP class in the Spring semester.
Students who successfully complete Art 4 in the fall semester are expected to prepare and submit an AP
portfolio in the Spring semester. Students may choose to explore, 2D or 3D design. Each work of art is
expected to have some grounding in the history of art and design, it should show the student’s involvement in
purposeful decision making about how to use art elements and principles. The pace is rigorous and at a college
level. It is intended for highly motivated students interested in the study of art.

Grading: Grades are generated on a point basis. Grading period grades are generated by the percentage of available points earned.
We will use the AP grading rubric for "quality" to grade your portfolio.
Portfolios will be graded 2 times per grading period, once before the progress reports are sent out and once at the end of the grading period.
A portfolio missing assignments will be graded by what is handed in. Missing assignments will cause the grade to drop 5 points for each missing assignment.
Example: Due; portfolio of 20 pieces, student hands in a portfolio of 18 pieces, The portfolio grade is 92, the two missing pieces will cause there to me a 10 point penalty changing the portfolio grade to 82
Students must be sure to work on the 2 portfolios, A portfolio of 13 breadth and 7 concentration pieces will not count as a portfolio of 20 pieces since one of the breadth pieces will not fit into the final portfolio. In this case the the 13th breadth will also encounter the 5 point penalty.
AP 2D Portfolio the AP Portfolio includes:
Breadth Section- 12 pieces which show the variety of your artistic talents. Photos of these pieces are posted on the AP website for
grading.
Concentration Section- 12 pieces which are closely related in theme and show a progression or growth. Photos of these pieces are
posted on the AP website for grading.
Quality Section- 5 pieces, may be from Breadth and/or Quality sections the actual work is sent to AP, we will work together to pick
your best work. Matted work must measure 18”x24” or smaller.
AP 3D Portfolio the AP Portfolio includes:
Breadth Section- 8 pieces which show the variety of your artistic talents. 2 photos of each from different angles are posted on the AP website for
grading.
Concentration Section- 12 pieces which are closely related in theme and show a progression or growth. 1 photo of each of these pieces is
posted on the AP website for grading.
Quality Section- 5 pieces, may be from Breadth and/or Quality sections 2 photos of each of the 5 works is posted to the AP website for evaluation.
What are the Expecations? Be creative, be unique...be yourself. Have artistic Integrity. Respect the teacher, other students, art
materials and the art room environment. Follow classroom procedures. Use your sketchbooks to record ideas and do preliminary
sketching. Have work in class for critique days, and complete assignments by due dates. Help other students by sharing constructive
criticism. Art can be messy; CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF!
Studio Art Assignments
In addition to completion of portfolio pieces, one “Express Yourself” assignment will be given as homework each grading period. “Express Yourself”
assignments are expected to be ready for display during your lunch period, on the due date. Any work which is not displayed by the
late bell will receive a grade penalty of 30 points, if it is not handed in by the morning of the following day it will carry an additional
penalty of 5 points off the grading period grade. Fifteen works of art of portfolio quality will be completed by the end this first
semester. Twenty-four works of art will be completed by the end of the 5th grading period.
Investigation Workbooks (IWB)
It is expected that all students will use a sketchbook on a regular basis as a journal of visual thoughts and ideas. Draw, write, paint,
collage and develop ideas in this book. The sketchbook tells a lot about an artist and is very personal. The work done in a sketchbook
is an ongoing process that helps artists collect their thoughts and promote new ones. Colleges frequently want to see your sketchbook
as part of a portfolio interview. Students will create assigned drawings, develop ideas for classroom projects, experiment with media,
write about their research, record ideas for future works of art and write about their own artwork. You will be required to create a
minimum of 3 preliminary sketches for each piece you create. Remember to build upon your knowledge of the principles and elements
of art learned in Art 1-3. It is advisable that you discuss your sketches with Mrs. B. before you begin your final artwork. I will be
looking for research both written and visual as well as preliminary sketches when your work is graded.
Are there tests? Tests will be given near the end of each marking period. The final exam will be given as per the UCPS calendar.
Attendance: Do not miss class. Time spent in SMC will be counted against you in participation points. AP requires that I see you
work on your projects. Be sure to discuss them with me regularly.
If my work is not done during class what should I do? Speak to Mrs. B. and make arrangements to work in the classroom before or
after school. Or finish it at home. It is impossible to finish an AP portfolio without working at home. Speak with your parents about
designating a place to create art where you will not have to clean everything up daily.
Keeping the Art Room Clean. Students are expected to keep the Art Room clean, (clean up after themselves and their
classmates). If needed, cleaning chore calendar will be posted in the classroom to assist students with taking turns at with each
job. Please clean up after yourself, do not expect other students to clean your mess.
Classes who do not keep the room clean will receive penalties to their grades. Individual students or the whole class may
lose points for leaving the classroom messy. These points may be deducted from classroom participation and/or project grades
at the discretion of the teacher.

Policy for Use of Electronic Devices in the Art Room
Cell Phones may be used when Mrs. Baumgarten expressly gives permission. Do not use your cellphone while Mrs Baumgarten is
talking or someone is presenting to the class. You may ask for permission to use your cell phone for searching the web or to take
pictures of your artwork in progress and completed. Before asking permission, keep all cell phones off and out of sight. Do not send
text messages during class. Any cell phone that is out without permission, in your lap or under the desk during class will be
confiscated. NO WARNINGS OR SECOND CHANCES WILL BE GIVEN.
iPod and Personal Media Device Privileges
Students in Art II and up can earn the privilege of listening to iPods and other PERSONAL musical devices by following these simple
rules.
➢ When you use your iPod you give up the privilege of talking. People tend to yell over the sound of the music in their ears.
➢ iPods may only be used during work time as designated by Mrs. Baumgarten and may not be used until express permission is given.
Earpods must be removed when signaled to do so.
➢ The classroom lights will be turned off briefly to signal students that they should remove ear pods, be quiet and listen for directions.
➢ Each student may use his or her own iPod. One iPod per person, no sharing and no passing the iPod around.
➢ Students who are listening to an iPod do so in lieu of talking to friends. (No shouting over the volume of the iPod.)
➢ iPods should be played at a low volume. Other students or Mrs Baumgarten should not be able to hear your music.
➢ It is assumed that you are listening to music, which has parental approval. No music that has been designated as having “parental
advisory, explicit content” should be listened to in class.
➢ NO iPods on days when Mrs. Baumgarten is absent.
Any student not following the above classroom policies will have their iPod confiscated for one week. Upon a second offense, a
parent will be required to pick up the iPod for return after the 1 week penalty time.
Students must follow all school rules in regards to iPod use in school. Students found using their iPods at other times or asking
other teachers for permission to use their iPod in class will ruin this privilege for ALL. The privilege will be revoked for every art
student forever!!!
Food in the Art Room. All school rules should be followed while in the art room, including, NO FOOD OR SWEET DRINKS in
classrooms; you may have water in a clear sealable container, keep it sealed and on the floor, classmates do not like it when water
spills on their artwork. Mrs. Baumgarten does not like it when a mouse comes to visit so no food please.
